The Gulf War is not called Desert Storm. Desert Storm is the name of only one operation on only one side of the war. Nobody calls WWII "Operation Quicksilver" or "Operation Clawhammer."

How many "sides" were there? I think it's generally accepted that the pre-war buildup was Operation Desert Shield and the actual combat operations were Operation Desert Storm.

Exactly. Redirects on WP can be for many reasons, including mistaken terminology or merged content. A redirect does not indicate a synonym by default.

Sad not to see the one historical event of February I always remember, which is the destruction of Dresden in 1945. (A bit downbeat, I know). Late January to early February are bad months for NASA and the British Royal Family. Apollo 1, Challenger, Columbia - George III, Victoria, George V, George VI.

If you want balance why not post a list of German cities as well. Or just look at the civilian casualty rates - by some estimates ten times as many German civilians were killed by strategic bombing than British. Or you could mention that evacuations due to unexploded WWII bombs still happen in Germany pretty much every week (and rarely make even the local news).

I'm not saying either side's actions justify or negate the other's, just that that's an odd definition of balance.

Just looked up that 2011 earthquake. Incredible amount of damage and unfortunate loss of life for that magnitude of earthquake. I generally associate anything in the 6 range with minor damage, but the photos of this are anything but minor.

The quake was incredibly shallow on a previously unknown fault line right under the CBD which is largely a drained swamp.

I nearly missed the event on the 28th because I wanted to call it Desert storm. If you go to the current Wikipedia page it opens with "The Gulf War (2 August 1990 – 28 February 1991), codenamed Operation Desert Shield (2 August 1990 – 17 January 1991) for operations leading to the buildup of troops and defense of Saudi Arabia and Operation Desert Storm (17 January 1991 – 28 February 1991)". If you are only going to take Gulf War then the question needs to state that it started in August because Desert Storm ended on the 28th as well. It's the equivalent of saying that after the end of a non tied basketball game that it's not acceptable to say the 4th period ended only the game did. There are a lot more squishy fills ins throughout this site.

No. One country's operation is not synonymous with a whole war. The Gulf War ended February 28. Other things may also have ended February 28, but they're not synonymous with the war. If there were different names for the actual Gulf War, that's a different story and I would support those names being accepted (like Vietnam War and American War referring to the same war).

I don't think your analogy helps your case either by the way; if the question asked "What operation ended Feb. 28" your analogy might make sense. But it's asking for the name of the *war*, and ending date is not the only criteria. People don't talk about the fourth period as if it is representative of the game itself.

The Tchaikovsky question was the first one in this series where I actually found the month useful - The Nutcracker would have premiered around Christmas time so could be ruled out.
