I am *shocked* that modulator-demodulator doesn't work! Shocked! I am, however, actually shocked that Genghis Khan isn't the most extensive family tree.

I'm guessing the key word is "recorded" as I doubt much of Genghis' family tree is written up nicely on ancestry.com.

I'm guessing "ancient" is used in the sarcastic sense and not in the sense of a legitimate ancient invention.

Genghis Khan has more descendants than Confucius, but he was not a philosopher, and his many couplings were not well documented.

I know the word ancient is a joke, but still. We still call the box that is needed to go on the internet a modem, eventhough now you can use it without being directly connected with a cable. Do they give it a different name in the US when a cable is not required? Or is it referring to "nobody is on a computer anymore but have internetdata on their smartphones"

(I don't have data btw, I only have internet when there is wifi, but that is in most of the places, at home, in the train in restaurants/pubs, just not when going out to nature, but that is more than fine. You are still reachable, can still get calls in case of an emergency))

The box is now called a router I believe.

The question refers to the old dial up modem, which took an eternity to connect to the internet.

Computer geek / pedant here (from the first result on google):

The main difference between the two devices is that a modem lets you connect to the internet, while a router distributes that connection to different devices. A modem is your gateway to the web, while a router is a central hub for your devices

So you still need a modem, even if you have a router.

What ddddan said, though I will add to sometimes a device can be a combined modem/router, just to keep things interesting :)

It doesn't always pay to make such assumptions. I read where the producers of Fiddler on the Roof approached Norman Jewison to be their director, assuming he was Jewish based on his name. The project was well underway before they discovered he is Protestant, and he still managed to get a Best Director nomination from the Academy. Unless your name is Montague, "What's in a name?"

Re: Modem

I'm not sure that the 1920s qualifies as "ancient", unless there is something that the Wikipedia article for "modem" isn't currently telling us.

Am retaking and typing in modem to correctly get the only one I missed so I can get the full 5 points. And I am *not* a cheater.
