+1
Level 46
Nov 3, 2019
Technically, matricide can be ANY mother, not just the murderers own mother.
+17
Level 88
Nov 13, 2019
Absolutely not. Matricide is killing ones own mother, and I just checked three dictionaries that all agree. If you kill a woman that just so happens to have children, that is properly defined as homicide

Honest question: does this apply for all the -cides? If you kill the king of a nation to which you don't belong, is it still regicide?
+1
Level 55
Feb 16, 2024
I looked up definitions for a bunch of different kinds of -cides, and it looks like this rule only applies if the murder victim is a member of the murder's family. However there are some terms that specify one's killing of their own family vs. someone else killing a member of a family. E.g. pedicide is the killing of a child in general, but there's also filicide and prolicide which specifically define someone killing their own children. Researching this it's actually kind of sickening that there's at least six different terms that describe the killing of children :(

So anyway, no, you don't have to be a citizen of the nation of the king you stabbed for it to be considered regicide.

Pluto comes from Πλούτων (Plouton) and is a Greek word, Ploutos which means wealth and which was an alternative Greek name for Hades. The Latin name "Pluto" is a direct borrowing from Greek and the native Latin equivalent to Hades is Dis Pater.
