Surely car should be acceptable for automobile?

Only if you say 'A car' as the word car does not begin with the letter A!

I hate to say this but I agree. I mean, who the hell uses the word "automobile" instead of "car" in this day and age. I literally thought the word and dismissed it because, I have never actually heard anyone use it, including ESL speakers.

Edit: I have to take this back now because I googled "what did Karl Benz invent" and the first result was "automobile".

Edit2: @ander317, I did understand the premise of the quiz, I just honestly never use the word automobile. I briefly considered it and (stupidly) discarded it without typing it to try. I was just trying to make excuses for my own idiocy.

I didn't even try "Auto" which 5 years of secondary school German taught me means car. I'm so ashamed. :-(

The title of this quiz was German History A-Z and this was the first clue, so the answer had to begin with A.

I would have never gotten pretzels even though I live in Germany and I've worked in a bakery. In German it's written with a b (Brezel), so my mind didn't even go in that direction. I couldn't stop thinking of potatoes even though they're neither typically German nor that directly connected with baking.

Dangit, I kept trying to think of what the V stands for. Didn't even try the answer given.

Fun facts about this rocket: its name translates to "Retribution Weapon." It could fly over 5000km/hr, and the 3000 that were manufactured killed about 9000 people directly. It was manufactured in Mittelbau-Dora, a slave labour concentration camp near Buchenwald; an estimated 20000 inmates died there. If you want to really have fun, look up Operation Paperclip or Operation Osoaviakhim to read about how its Nazi scientists were spirited away by the US and USSR to work on the Cold War.

The U answer is pretty generic .... what about U-bahn or U-boat? Something a bit more German? Umlaut?

Also maybe Edelweiss or Essen for E?

I think the answer to U is just fine. I mean what would the question be to make U-Bahn or U-Boot/Boat historic? Or any less generic?

What is it all about this Yule holiday at jetpunk? I met it several times related to Germany, but I never heard of it in Germany and know nobody who did. Also wikipedia reveals that there are no significant connections with Germany. It's rather connected to Scandinavia. Is there eventually a confusion of "germanic" and "german"?

Don't be offended. Can you offer a Germany-related or germanic answer for the letter Y, that your average anglophile would recognise?

Me as a german has never heard of yule before getting on Jetpunk. Even if there isn't any better word for Y (which there is: Ypsilon), choosing the scandinavian (and maybe germanic) tradition of yule is not in any way acceptable. Germanic isn't the same as german!

D is not the former name of Gdansk, it still is the German name of the city.
