Good quiz, but some of the names here don't belong on the same list as Duane Allman, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray, Jeff Beck....etc.

This a is a list of legendary guitar players. It never said they had to be good.

Yes they do. The blues is not the only guitar music that counts.

To be on a list of "Legendary Guitar Players" they just have to match two criteria: Are they a guitar player? Are they legendary? You can be legendary without being a "good" guitar player, however you want to define that.

by this logic the guy who made a guitar out of a toaster should be on here. as he is an absolute legend.

As much as I'd love to see it, Alexi's never getting on a general top guitarists list. Iommi at least should be there.

Steve Howe, Alex Lifeson, Jimmy Page, Donald Roeser... none of my favorites on that list.

As long as we're naming other greats, how about Django Reinhardt?
+1
Level 86
Jan 26, 2020
Well yes, that would be great. I don't like manouche jazz, but Django is legendary indeed, and that would feature a totally different style than all those rockers and bluesmen.
+1
Level 75

Django could beat everyone else on this list with two fingers tied together. :) Continuing with the outliers I'd also include Chet Atkins even though I know country music isn't popular with many on this site. Interestingly, Atkins said Reinhardt was one of his influences.

Dear crybabies,

As with every other "Name the great ___" quiz on this site, this is not intended to be an exhaustive list. A quiz listing every great guitar player would take hours. So not every guitar player is here, and maybe not even your personal favorite (how dare the quizmaker put this quiz together without consulting you!).

The quiz is fine as it is. Every name on here is a famous and influential guitar player. There are guys with killer chops, and there are guys like Cobain and Townshend who were hugely influential, if not renowned for their technique. They're all great. Not everyone needs Eddie Van Halen's technique to be great. There is a guy in every town in America that can tear through the solo to Freebird, but how many people wrote Nevermind? We're all proud of you for knowing who Joe Satriani is (and Robert Johnson, the patron saint of guitar know-it-alls). Now get over yourselves.

+1
Level 75

What's wrong with initiating a discussion of others who might also deserve to be on the list? Not everyone has the same taste in music. It doesn't make us crybabies.
+1
Level 75
Jan 28, 2020
There's nothing wrong with discussing music and you might feel that the list should be more eclectic but no one "deserves" to be on the list - it's not a quiz of which musicians the compiler necessarily thinks are the best guitarists.

Paraphrasing here but when clapton was asked what it felt like to be the greatest guitar player in the world he replied that he didn't you know you would have to ask Prince.

I don't know about this list. Eddie Van Halen is great, obviously, but how can you have Eddie without Randy Rhoads or George Lynch? What about Angus Young? Kurt Cobain couldn't carry Joe Satriani's gear onto a stage. What about Steve Vai? What about John 5? What about Dimebag? What about Zakk Wylde? What about Tony Iommi? Having Jerry Garcia on a guitar list is like having Adolf Hitler on a humanitarian award. What about Prince? He was a ridiculous guitarist. What about a woman like Orianthi? What about Yngwie for God's sake? What about Marty Friedman or Michael Angelo Batio? Having Tom Morello on here in place of anyone I just listed is a joke.

Jan 26, 2020
You might be confusing him with the one-named performer who wrote "Loser" and "Where It's At." That guy just goes by "Beck," and his full name is Beck Hansen. Jeff Beck is an English guitarist who was a big part of the 60's British music scene, and then he went solo, mostly working as guitar player par excellence with a focus on mostly instrumental recordings.

I never heard of her so I don't know what to say... Legendary? I don't think so. Then of course, the problem may be that the quiz asks for legendary guitarists, which is subjective (almost meaningless in fact) and restrictive at the same time...
