I grew up watching Lawrence Welk with my parents. I hated it at the time, but now that I'm older, it's more of an interesting look at what used to be considered "entertainment".

I understood the inclusion of most of the bands on the list, but Smash Mouth seemed a non sequitur. Have I just missed the vitriol for them? I would've expected to see Cold Play, Adam Levine and the other 4 guys, or even Green Day before them.

Yeah, I didn't know that was a thing. But Smash Mouth kept on appearing on most-hated lists so I added them.

Smash Mouth was basically Nickelback before Nickelback became Nickelback. Those guys were/are horrible. Very surprised Miley Cyrus wasn't on the list.

It's often framed as kinda ironic and joking, but I mostly see people loving Smash Mouth, on the internet at least.
+4
Level 74
Mar 13, 2015
I don't understand why it was cool to hate Smash Mouth. They were one of the very few bands with multiple top 40 hits in the late '90s/early 2000's that I actually liked.
+1
Level 65
Mar 13, 2015
I liked them when I was 7 and so did my old grade school friends. It's now a running joke and a source of embarrassment among us. They were featured in Shrek, so I probably shouldn't hate them too much. After all, Shrek is...

Really?!! Smash Mouth has been the butt of jokes for my friends for years! Whenever we hate something we always just say "that's smash mouth"....They're kind of like Chumbawumba..which I was surprised wasn't on this list
+1
Level 90

Ha. As a Michigander who has never been to the UK nor ever paid any attention to British pop music, I can easily say that Chumbawamba is my favorite Burnley based musical act.

Except Chumbawamba aren't really "pop", that one "hit" they had, yeah, I'm sure that wasn't intentional. They have a lot of material that probably wouldn't be played on general stations. Too political.

Coldplay? You either like or don't like Coldplay. Why would you hate Coldplay?
+4

It's mainly their sucking. At music. And his terrible voice. To me, they are more like rubbing styrofoam together than Nickelback and Creed combined.

Kanye West, isn't that the dude whose only claim of fame was a couple of months ago when he did something together with Sir Paul and his fans kept tweeting about how nice it was of Kanye to boost the fame of this unknown Sir Paul?
+4
Level 54
Mar 13, 2015
'Only claim to fame'? You serious?

According to wikipedia, West has "sold more than 21 million albums and 66 million digital downloads.[2] He has won a total of 21 Grammy Awards, making him one of the most awarded artists of all-time and the most Grammy-awarded artist of his age.[3] Time named West one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2005 and 2011. He has also been included in a number of Forbes annual lists.[4] Three of his albums rank on Rolling Stone's 2012 "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list; two of his albums feature at #8 and #1 in Pitchfork Media's The 100 Best Albums of 2010-2014.[5]"

Despite all this, he's still hated. And there are still ignorant people like yourself who think he's only known for one song.

He isn't known for one thing, there is a long list of both musical and non-musical reasons. That'd be on there - maybe top ten, definitely not number 1. I'm not a Kanye fan by the way, just don't like ignorance or sensationalist comments.

Re Yoko Ono: 1. She probably did not (at least singlehandedly) break up the Beatles. 2. Does she really qualify as a singer?
+2
Level 67

She absolutely does qualify as a singer, she did a lot of music both by herself and with John Lennon, even if most of it wasn't very good ...
+2
Level 70
Sep 30, 2018
"Wasn't very good" is an ENORMOUS understatement. It's like saying New Orleans got a "bit of rain" when Katrina made landfall. They're both absolute disasters. Yoko Ono deserves every bit of her horrid reputation not only as an artist but also as a human being.
+1
Level 41
Aug 18, 2021
As a Beatles tragic, I must concur with mikeb here. While Yoko's presence in the recording studio did lead to resentment amongst the group, the main culprit in the break up of Liverpool's finest was criminal businessman Allen Klein.

Having said that, Yoko has certainly been blamed, often solely, for this premature ending for decades.

She has also sung.

Very, very badly.

I'm not sure Milli Vanilli were hated. People recognised they were exploited, and damn those songs are still catchy. Also, were "Walking On The Sun" and their cover of "I'm a Believer" not hits for Smash Mouth in the US?

I'm sure. They were hated.

If you wanted to add another similar but older group to this list you could put on The Monkees. My dad likes to tell the story about how disappointed he felt when it came out that they didn't play their own instruments and how he went home and smashed all his records.

Taking this quiz a second time, I realised that the Ice Ice Baby lyrics are wrong. It should be:

"To the extreme, I rock a mic like vandal, Light up the stage and wax a chump like a candle."

However, I am not enough of a fan to force the issue, and in fact quite like the idea of Vanilla Ice's lyrics having so little meaning that it doesn't matter which way round you put them.

I remember back in the late 70's, Debbie Boone's "You Light Up My Life" was played so nauseatingly often that one DJ proudly declared that was the final time he was playing it...then leaned back on air and smashed the LP on a table. It was hilarious.

The nonsense about U2 is ridiculous. People got a free album and they hate them for it...F U! Don't listen to it. How many bands that are HUGE give their new albums away. People are stupid. Also they, U2 are great. While I agree that their more recent stuff isn't as classic as Boy, War, etc. they are still very good and great live. As to Bono personally, people are just jealous. He is an excellent human being, not pretentious at all.

It's a shame people only remember Kanye West for his downfall. If people were willing to look past it, they would see that his first 6 albums were actually beautiful and transcendent.
