I agree with you- we all know Cyprus is closer to Africa and Asia but it is still hard to put it in a category because it is an island - therefore not attached to a continent directly. And given the fact that it is still close enough to Europe geographically but especially culturally plus an EU member it should be considered Europe

And Australia participates in the Eurovision song contest, hence it is in Europe. Right? Cyprus is in Asia. Turkey is in Asia (apart from that little bit on the European side of the Bosphorus). Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan are in Asia. That's it.

Never heard of Cyprus being in Asia but that's myabe because, as it is a part of European Union, we think it that way in Europe... Geographically it may be part of Asia (Geologically maybe) but as it's a part of every european organisation existing (and of non of their asian counterparts), I find this a bit perturbing.

Just look where it is, close to Turkey and Syria... The problem is that people probably think that the Mediterranean sea belongs to Europe (must be a Roman misconception). On the other hand, do you know that Turkey has been a serious candidate to enter the EU (that's before Erdogan made it impossible) ? It is not required to be set in Europe to become a member of European political organisations.

Well, maybe that comes from the fact that it's populated by Europeans - Greeks and Turks.

I'm European and I've always considered Cyprus to be a part of Asia. The EU and other alike unions/organisations do not define continental borders. Someone once commented that it's culturally European and geographically Asian. It's as simple as that.

I guess you can argue that since a piece of turkey lies in Europe then it could apply for EU membership. But I cannot understand why Cyprus is deemed to be in Asia. It is a European country in the EU uses the euro, etc.etc. I have seen quizzes where it gets put back into Europe. Just like the Ural mountains make Cyprus the cut-off point where Europe ends and Asia begins.

So you're admitting that only a small part of Turkey is in Europe, and yet the boundary line then curves through the Aegean and Mediterranean, between the Greek islands and Turkish mainland, out around Cyprus, between Cyprus and Syria/Lebanon, then back into the rest of the Mediterranean between Crete and Libya?

Check a map and tell me that's not an illogically absurd geographical "cut-off"

Surprised Dominican Republic is here, while Uruguay, Argentina, Dominica and Brunei aren't. Cuba seems to surprise people, but the country has one of the best health care systems so it makes sense. Also, I always forget Cyprus on these kinds of quizzes, as it seems to me to be more European.

I really, really like this comment. People seem so set on Cyprus being European just by what they've heard (like EU status). If you just look at a map, it makes no sense.

Thank you sir/madam.

If we are basing it on distance to the continental mainland then the most logical placement for Cyprus would be, in order:

1. Asia
2. Africa
3. Europe

The CIA World Factbook had better check with the experts at the CDC. In the National Vital Statistics Report published June 24, 2019, they said that the US life expectancy fell, for the 3rd year in a row, now down to 78.6 years. The US would still be on the list, but near the bottom. And no where near 80.1. The CDC publishes this every year, so I don't know where the CIA is getting their info but maybe going to the epidemiologists who actually study this might be a good idea.

Aug 17, 2019
78.6 and 80.1 aren't really that different. Does the CDC publish an error range? I would expect that the numbers for other countries would actually have much larger error ranges.

That number for the US seems pretty high. Last I heard it was more like 76 or 77. Not really sure how it can be a measurement error though, since I assume that deaths in the US are well recorded. Is there some methodology other than taking the average age of people who die in a specific year being used?

I'm not sure how they calculate it. The number is for life expectancy at birth. Clearly, previous estimates for life expectancy have been very inaccurate as life spans have risen a lot.
