This might be nitpicking, but I am not entirely happy with "Pale". as far as I know, the area is always referred to as the "Pale of Settlement" (it is almost like accepting "war" for "war of the Roses").

Surely the dynasty is "Capetian". Capet was the house, but the dynasty is never referred to as that, in the same way that the Angevin dynasty is never called Anjou.

i expected the answers to form some sort of clue for the last name, it turns out this is not the case.

Anyway, IMHO the 3x3 scheme would be way more useful if the words could be formed only by connecting adjacent letters.
