Please allow alternative spelling "caltrap" (there are several listed in wikipedia, but this one fits the grid too!).

I think you meant to say anti-cavalry weapon, not calvary. Calvary is the Jesus hill.

Some difficult ones here for me. Enjoyed it even though I couldn't get Cleopatra.

Glad I looked up the origin of the term "beyond the pale" last week.

"Each grid letter may be used only once within an individual answer". What about Clara and Palace?

This might be nitpicking, but I am not entirely happy with "Pale". as far as I know, the area is always referred to as the "Pale of Settlement" (it is almost like accepting "war" for "war of the Roses").

I'm guessing coal is still an important export.

Did anyone else accidentally get "pale" by jokingly entering it for druid's ethnicity, or was it just me?

Surely the dynasty is "Capetian". Capet was the house, but the dynasty is never referred to as that, in the same way that the Angevin dynasty is never called Anjou.

i expected the answers to form some sort of clue for the last name, it turns out this is not the case. Anyway, IMHO the 3x3 scheme would be way more useful if the words could be formed only by connecting adjacent letters.

I thought this was a Boggle-style connect the letters quiz and got very confused.
