Surprised so few people knew Tambora - arguably a far more significant eruption than Krakatoa.

Well, I think that's because they made the movie "Krakatoa, East of Java" (even though it's west of Java) but no film about Tambora.

Please be more generous with the spellings of Kangchenjunga. The Wikipedia article begins "Kangchenjunga, also spelled Kanchenjunga, is the third highest mountain in the world," yet when I tried Kanchenjunga, it did not work.

In other words, I could spell it "Kangandafallaalkndalakdnadga" and that counts, but "Kanchenjunga" (a correct spelling) doesn't? That seems a bit off.

Great list. A lot that I knew, but a few I hadn't heard of (Mount Thor is awesome). I would have added Mount Fuji, Vinson Massif, and Mount Mitchell (highest U.S. peak east of the Mississippi--though I'm biased, being originally from North Carolina).

The Temple Mount doesn't really exist as a hill anymore. It's a manmade stone platform. Could have put on Mount Scopus, Mount Zion, Mount of Olives, Cavalry Hill, Mount Moriah, if you wanted something from Jerusalem.

I think it's Calvary Hill or Mt. Calvary, not Cavalry, unless there is a place there dedicated to horse soldiers that I'm unaware of. :) I agree, any of those would be good substitutions.

yes, Calvary. I think that might have been auto-correct. Though I guess Calvary Hill doesn't really exist anymore, either. You can see a bit of it under glass inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Can someone explain how Chimborazo is the farthest from the center of the Earth when it's not the highest peak on Earth? Does it have to do with the thickness of plate tectonics? I am curious to know.
+1

Feb 21, 2019
No it has to do with the fact that the Earth is not a perfect sphere. Chimborazo is in Ecuador sitting almost exactly on the equator.
