Nice quiz, I didn't know Alexander the Great had heterochromia, very interesting! Also, there is a ] in the explanation for the polar bear question.

CDC: "Fatal and Nonfatal Drowning Outcomes Related to Dangerous Underwater Breath-Holding Behaviors — New York State, 1988–2011" https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6419a3.htm?s_cid=mm6419a3_w

I take it that the "Underwater" part means they're disqualified as counterexamples to #3.

It says drowning. Those who try do hold their breath underwater eventually can't do it anymore and inhale water.
+1
Level 41
Oct 4, 2021
Underwater and with no air you would not inhale water. You could at the surface inhale water and air together, in a panic. US Navy trained.

Maybe I didn't use the right word, but drowning means dying of having your lungs full of water. Nobody dies of asphyxiation underwater, everybody drowns, because you just can't hold your breath until death, that may be our most primal reflex...
+1
Level 74
Oct 4, 2021
Not just from panic. While underwater and with no air you can pass out (e.g. hypoxic blackout (sometimes called 'shallow water blackout.) and while unconscious you can indeed inhale water. Hypoxic blackout is related to the elevated C02 level that follows hyperventilation -- typically intentional -- hence freedivers are at risk, as well as people doing breathing meditation techniques in/near water. If you have a hypoxic blackout on land, no biggie as your system will regulate once you're unconscious, but if you're in the pool, tub, sea things get bad fast, and brain death is quicker than from garden-variety drowning. Play safe with your breath work y'alls!

So does that mean it's possible for Boris Johnson to be U.S. President? Even if it were it's presumably unlikely people would actually elect a demagogue from New York with weird hair.

Yes, he can. But not right now. There are 3 qualifications for being president: be a natural-born US citizen, be over 35 years old and be a resident of the US for over 14 years.

"Is it possible for a lion to breed with a tiger"

Of course, it's possible...

It's called a liger, it's pretty much my favorite animal. It's like a lion and a tiger mixed... bred for its skills in magic.

Ligers (and tigons) suffer from all kinds of genetic problems and much have shorter lifespans then either parent. They also have to be delivered by C-section because the kittens would kill the mother during delivery due to the size difference of lions and tigers. Mothers often die from liger breeding effects. Most liger kittens die in their first year too, from birth defects and/or gigantism. More about why ligers are a terrible idea

When it comes to magic, I prefer unicorns. Less cruelty, more sparkles.

Breathing is both voluntary and involuntary, so if you hold your breath long enough to start depriving your brain of oxygen, you lose consciousness first, and then begin to breathe normally.

The only way to stop this is to drug yourself, cover your mouth, immerse yourself or do something similar; but in those cases you're killing yourself by overdose, smothering or drowning, not by holding your breath.

Petition to add the word ‘intentionally’ into the breath holding question (‘is it possible to kill yourself by intentionally holding your breath’) just to satisfy nitpicking people who are familiar with looking after apnoeic neonates. And children with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome!

#14. It is possible for a woman to become a Catholic priest, only within the "Old Catholic" congregations. A branch of Catholicisme that governed themselves when Catholicisme went underground during the Reformation, and still excist today.

I think you should be more specific with the particle question (that it refers to atomic or subatomic particles). Particle could mean something macroscopic like a grain of sand or a pebble.
+7
Level 84
Oct 4, 2021
You're missing the point. According to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, the act of observing a particle affects it. The more precisely you know where it is, the less precisely you know where it's going, and vice versa. The size of the particle is irrelevant. For a macroscopic object, the effects of observation would be negligible, but the object nevertheless experiences a change. You cannot perfectly measure any particle's position and velocity.

About the iguana legalization: it is legal to own one in every state except Florida. Iguanas (especially green iguanas) are invasive species in Florida and are responsible for infrastructure damage to bridges and sea walls as they are burrowing animals (they climb trees but they also burrow to nest and shelter from cold weather).

The weather in southern Florida is what makes it possible for these invasive lizards to thrive. Various cold fronts in the past couple of decades have killed off a lot of them, but natural selection is working in favor of those resilient ones who survive, and since they lay dozens of eggs that hatch successfully, the population booms once again.

I don't know about the legality in Puerto Rico, but they are also invasive over there. Their native habitat is in Central and South America.
