While “short-sightedness” has definitely acquired the figurative meaning you mentioned, it still retains its original literal meaning, i.e., it’s synonymous with “nearsightedness” and used instead of the medical term “myopia”—it is Downunder, anyway.

Am I the only one who found the wording of this off-puttingly weird?! I got it by ignoring all but the final 4 words, but kept getting confused by the opening part. Probably just me!
