Because the Vatican is just buildings inside Rome. A little too obvious.

There are a few trees in the gardens. If like 5 or 6 of them stand a little too close together, that might already be 10% of the country that's forested right there!

"Austria was Hungary so it had a piece of Turkey."

Another variant had "dipped in Greece" tagged on.

- popular kid's joke around the Balkan Wars era of 1911-13, just before World War One.

Ukraine is a bit of a surprise. I mean, I was there and saw no forests, but still with the size of the country and all...

Took this once and did horribly after guessing plenty of desert nations. Then saw the answers, and thought "huh I guess most of these countries are in Europe for some reason." Then I checked the title of the quiz. WOMP WOMP

Got a few obvious ones and then just started guessing randomly... plenty of time to name every country in Europe.

Yes, but that didn't help people like me who completely forgot Moldova, and thought I'd already typed Denmark. I had time left but just couldn't figure out which ones I was missing.

Think countries with relatively few steep mountains, where most the of the area is prone to agriculture.

That's a very good hint, actually. Definitely better than my system of "name every country that doesn't look that green on a satellite map". I didn't realize that green =/= trees until really late. You could imagine my shock at seeing 6% for Ireland, the Emereld Isle.

I don't think Greenland is counted since there's only one very small forest there, and Greenland makes up 98% makes up the area of the Kingdom of Denmark. Denmark proper has been heavily deforested over the past several centuries so that's probably why it's so low here.

There is a famous Irish lyric known as The Lament for Kilcash that begins:

Cad a dhéanfaimid feasta gan adhmaid?

Tá deireadh na gcoilte ar lár.

(What will we do in the future without wood?

The end of the forests is come.)

Definitely harder than the Asian version. The strategy of "name desert countries" is obviously not helpful here. However, as others have mentioned, there is enough time for an experienced Jetpunker to name literally every country in Europe, so I just did that.

I think the data for the Vatican would exist pretty easily if someone wanted to count the trees. Although I wonder what percent of the Vatican is "painted trees in frescos" and if that can count toward the total
