What on earth is a bridge on the river Tyne doing in a quiz about London?

To be fair, if you aren't from the UK it's gonna be difficult to tell one millennium bridge from another

The London Millennium Bridge is a suspension bridge whereas the Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a tilting tied-arch bridge.

Gateshead is 285 miles from London. Nice bridge though .

Greater London has gotten out of control, if it reaches all the way up to Gateshead. FYI, a photo of the Milennium bridge in London might show somewhere in the picture St Paul's, Tate Modern, or pedestrians getting thrown to and fro for weeks after opening.

The British Museum has a total of 8 million priceless exhibits, only 1% (80,000) exhibits are on show at any one time. Entrance is free and when in London I spent many happy hours discovering these worldwide wonders including much appertaining to Britain.

Thinking "Yeoman Warder" should be accepted for Beefeater

Yes, please accept yeoman for beefeater.

Level 76

Yes - totally. While beefeater is the better known term it was originally applied as an insult!

The tower is not called Big Ben. The bell inside is Big Ben (one of them). The tower is called Elizabeth Tower.

Level 34

Agree re Big Ben is the bell not the tower (Elizabeth), and Yeoman Warder is the correct title of the uniformed gentlemen.

Any chance of accepting St Stephen's Tower? Hate that it's now called Elizabeth Tower

Level 74

I hate it too, but understand it never was St Stephen's Tower - that is a different tower in the complex

Yes, that is the tower without a clock at the other end of the building.

Wonder how many got the 5th one because they started typing names of bridges? I know of at least one.

"Beefeater" is the popular name. Their actual name is "yeoman warders", so accept that.

The White Tower is the castle keep. The Castle is called the Tower of London.

While all these comments are true - White tower; big ben; beefeaters etc; the reality is that the answers are actually what most Londoners would give.

I'm a Londoner and would say Yeoman of the Guard', before Beefeater

A shame the nickname of the bridge is not an answer .... I knew the real name but think the nickname has stuck (certainly for Londoners)

The London transport roundel is not just for the tube
+1
Level 79
Aug 10, 2023
Yes, this is strictly true, but the one in the quiz is one of the specifically coloured roundels.

There is a family of roundels, each referring to a specific mode of London transport. The blue roundel and a white roundel on a blue background are the ones used for TfL.
