Maybe you could accept Strider for Aragorn? Also... couldn't for the life of me spell Saruman. Tried Saurumon, Sauroman, Sauromen, Sauramon, etc. Don't remember if I tried any varients with Sar... but maybe.

Mar 26, 2019
yeah, so, why wouldn't it be accepted? It's the first name that is known to others, the first name of his alias (a.k.a. other name). It's not a surname. Anyway, irrelevant now...
+1
Level 28

Gandalf also has many names, and we don't know if any of them is the "real" one. Sam, Merry, Pippin are also nicknames. What is even a name? I think we should accept a name as long as it has use in the book.

Ah, that was a pleasure, reminding my favourite book of all time. Can you please also add Fangorn for Treebeard? If I remember right, it's kind of his official name, while Treebeard is more a nickname (and of course, his real name is in the Ent language and not understandable for most other races).
+1
Level 92

Second the motion. I stared at the name for about 30 seconds making sure I'd spelled it right before I thought to try Treebeard.
+2
Level 47
Jun 28, 2013
Treebeard is his real name, and in Sindarin (the second language in Lord of the Rings), it is Fangorn. In my opinion, I don't believe this should be an acceptable answer because it is also the name of the forest, Fangorn Forest. Even though it is ONE of his names, I think only Treebeard should be accepted. Treebeard is also the name he is call in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
+2
Level 26
Apr 27, 2015
Or Gandalf should be able to be Mithrandir
+5
Level 77
Aug 6, 2015
I love LOTR nerds...okay...so TECHNICALLY...Treebeard isn't his "real name" either. One's real name is their name in their native tongue. Recall that in the Old Entish language, names for things include their entire history. Since Ents are so old, Treebeard's name would be incredibly long. The paraphrased example from the book is this: a-lalla-lalla-rumba-kamanda-lindor-burúme, the word for hill (or rather a very minute part of a particular hill's name).

You should make this quiz more of a challenge. It is too easy to get 100% in that amount of time, someone could look up the answers before time's up, so maybe shorten time? Hope this helps, wasn't trying to be a grumps! ;)

The balrog that faces Gandalf is not named. Gothmog is killed by Ecthelion long before the events of Lord of the Rings
+4
Level 55
Dec 29, 2014
Balrogs were spirits of the maiar that were corrupted by Melkor to his service. The balrog Gandalf faces on the bridge of Khazad-dum is called Durin's Bane. Therefore, I don't think Balrog should be accepted as a correct answer. It should be Durin's Bane.

God dammit, I need a girlfriend...

Level 71
Jul 8, 2016
I don't think you can say that the Balrog in Moria is called "Durin's Bane" just because it is referred to as that. It's not the name just an epithet. Surely no one would suggest that the One Ring is called "Isildur's Bane" or that that is its name but it is referred to as that.
