It's a wonder anyone scored a run in 1968!

"The Year of the Pitcher". It was a great World Series, too, even if my beloved Cardinals didn't defend their previous championship.

Which is why they raised the mound the following year.

Lowered. A raised mound is an advantage to the pitcher.

One recent rule change has also had an effect on ERA's. The strike zone has effectively been enlarged.

The low strike may be a bit more prevalent these days. But the high strike and the corners have all gotten tighter. I don't buy the enlarged strikezone argument. The change in approach by batters (taking huge hacks even with two strikes, and placing emphasis on power over contact) and the specialization of bullpens has way more to do with the absurd strikeout numbers than the evolving strikezone.

Peter Rose and Carl Yastrzemski still managed to bat over .300 average in that crazy year!

I spent the first minute trying to spell "Noah Syndergaard" before entertaining the possibility that he wasn't the answer.
