The word "The" does not count in alphabetizing "The Monkees" because you don't alphabetize words that are articles such as "the" or "at" The and other common words[edit] In certain contexts, very common words (such as articles) at the beginning of a sequence of words are not considered for ordering, or are moved to the end. So "The Shining" is considered "Shining" or "Shining, The" when alphabetizing and therefore is ordered before "Summer of Sam". Courtesy of Wikipedia Get it right :P

Then what about The Mamas and The Papas? I left "the's" out of the answer because instructions said to "ignore" them; but the quiz wouldn't accept mamas and papas. The correct answers should be consistent.

It accepts "mamas and the papas" ... it means the first word. But good point nonetheless.

I tried Mamas and Papas first, too, thinking that none of the "thes" would be required.

Technically, Marc Cohn, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Marvin Gaye & Michael Bolton should not be in this list because music stores would list them by their last name.

Why would you freak out simply because you saw them on a quiz? That's unhealthy. You should go see a psychiatrist or something.

Last time I checked, My Chem and Manson were vaguely well known, and also began with the letter M, so I don't see why they wouldn't be on this quiz, there's no need to freak.

Mamas and Papas should be accepted, especially since the quiz is about words starting with an M. I typed that and when the answer didn't show up I let it go thinking that maybe it's another/original version or something.
