Wondered the same thing, so I looked it up. Ryan finished second to Jim Palmer in 1973. He went 21-16 with a 2.87 ERA and a career best 383 K's in 326 innings. He also threw two of his seven career no-hitters that season. That year Palmer went 22-9 with a 2.40 ERA. He only had 158 K's in 296.1 innings, but he did have six shutouts to Ryan's four.
I've probably taken this thing 3 or 4 times over the past 3 years and every time I try "McClain" and "McClane" and never get "McLain" - surely I can remember between now and when it likely pops up soon on newly edited stream when the 2020 winners are announced...
Eric "Game Over" Gagne...good memories. I saw him pitch at Dodger Stadium in 2003 and bought a shirt with his face on it that had blue thread sown into the shirt for his goatee. :)
