YEAH!!! Winnipig is cool, I'm canadian and instead of the cup they win a peg. I actually picked a peg from my mom's pegboard game for them when they won last game and sent it to them. Also, I'm a Pepsi-drinking, Anaheim Ducks fan and a Patriots fan, and most importantly, a diehard Philadelphia 76ers fan "process-truster", so you can imagine what I think of Pooplanta! The only good thing from Pooplanta is Dwight Howard. GO PHILADELPHIA 76ERS!!!
If people use a mental map for these sorts of things, it's pretty easy to go from Boston to NYC, and then on down to Philly. I choose to believe that that's what's going on, rather than any disrespect toward the French Connection.
I did better on this than I do on most sports quizzes, but my dad worked for the Washington Capitals for the first 17 years of my life. Still, many of these teams are after my time. Never heard of the Senators, Coyotes, Wild, Predators, Hurricanes or Blue Jackets. The Avalanche started playing after my dad stopped working for the Capitals but I had at least heard of them. I think the Lightning, Panthers, Sharks and Ducks all came around at that same time, too. I got them, even though I never saw any of them play. Did Nashville used to be called the Raptors?
The Sharks entered the NHL in 1991, the Senators and Lightning in 1992, Ducks in 1993, the Avalanche relocated from Quebec City in 1995, the Coyotes from Winnipeg in 1996, Hurricanes from Hartford in 1997, the Predators in 1998, and the Blue Jackets and Wild in 2000. The Capitals joined in 1974, so if your dad worked for them for 17 from the very first season, that would be 1991. Obviously I have no idea how old you are so I don't know exactly what years your dad worked for the Caps, but all those teams should be during your time. I can assume you also guessed the Whalers, Nordiques, and Rockies?
All of those teams joined the league after '91 so by your math what I said was exactly right. And actually I think you were pretty much spot on... except.. I suppose he was still working for them for a few years after some of these teams got franchises it was just after I had stopped going to games. I was in high school then and had better things to do.
Hockey boring? I'm unclear how that could possibly be, even for a newcomer to the game. Pretty much continuous play for three 20 minute periods. Goals are scored frequently - unlike soccer (football), where that is a much more rare occurrence. No "injury" flops onto the turf, as is now common in soccer. Hockey players are out there hitting hard, going 100% with on-the-fly player changes. Fighting, and not silly fake fights. Thank you, Canada!!!
Any other Hockey fans hear that they're going to move the Phoenix coyotes to Hartford to reform the Whalers? I hope they do, because then I can go root for the Whalers AND the Bruins :D
I've heard these rumors, but I fear that if they did move back to Hartford, bleeding hearts wouldn't let them keep the name Whalers because of the 'negative' connotations. Even though it is referring to the area's history.
Re-formatting may have been easy... but now I have to remember a whole new set of teams! At least my team's division shouldn't be too hard with 2 New Yorks and 2 Penn teams.
Liked this quiz. I kept trying yellow jackets for columbus. My mind drew a blank on some of them...still can't believe that i missed ottawa, tampa bay, carolina, calgary and san jose. oh well.
Great quiz!!! Very easy though. I got 30/30 with 48 seconds left. I created a more challenging quiz. http://www.jetpunk.com/user-quizzes/54836/highest-point-scoring-nhl-players-2013-14-season (copy link)
I'm going to break the mold of the standard comment types here and just offer some appreciation for the Quizmasters who go to the effort of keeping their quizzes up to date for as long as some of you do. Thanks.
The team was named after Canadians soldiers who wore a Maple Leaf in WWI. The plural Leafs is actually grammatically correct since it refers to a group and is a proper noun. As a common noun, it wold be maple leaves with maple being an adjective and not considered part of the title or noun.
Crap, 29/30 again, I always forget one. It was the Wild this time... I was browsing a mental map of the US and kind of feeling the missing team had to be somewhere around Minnesoa, but all I could remember was that it was not the North Stars anymore.
28/30... missed the capitals and predators. Not bad for an 11 year old who has never watched a single NHL game in his life. (How? Mostly just studying the scores when hey come up on the "Bottomline" when I'm watching baseball.
I personally don't like hockey because it seems like anarchy. Unlike soccer, the puck moves around so haphazardly and changes possession so frequently that there doesn't seem to be a lot of strategy going on, just a bunch of robust Russians and Canadians slapping the puck as hard as they can towards the other team's goal.
Wow, I can tell you really know a lot about hockey! I'm sure you're right that it's totally random and haphazard and they don't really plan out anything that they do. Maybe they should stop play regularly when one player brushes another so hard that he apparently loses an eye, then they can stand in a line with their hands over their giblets while another guy shoots the puck as hard as he can at them to try to score. That would make way more sense. :-\
While I'm from 'The State of Hockey' I don't think its possible for me to care less about the game. However, I do love ESPN and was curious to see just how many team names I absorbed through osmosis: I scored 30/31; missed the Capitals.
Hey! Check out my page for tons of hockey content, including "Top 10 Montreal Canadiens" and "noooolans Hockey Quiz"! Leave a suggestion in the comments of my quizzes as to what I should do next!
Completely agree. This is an extremely common & accepted nickname for them, even among English-speaking fans. But I'm a Habs fan, so maybe I'm not entirely objective.
Also, no Nashville has always been the Preds.
Go Jackets!!!
Goalies on Detroit
Does that help???

But in the future, as soon as Kraken starts playing, the quiz should be updated of course.
