There are some great stories about that and other early Olympics. Look it up on Wikipedia. Back when it was still a pretty small and disorganized event there were all sorts of crazy shenanigans...

Kalbahamut's correct. The 1904 games were to be held in Chicago, the first time they were held outside of Europe. At the same time the World's Fair (Louisiana Exposition) was going to be held in St. Louis and they didn't want competition for attendance. The Olympic committee was told if they didn't move the games from Chicago to St. Louis, that St. Louis would hold a competing sports event. The committee caved and moved the games to St. Louis.

St. Louis didn't deserve to host the Olympics.

and, yes, this is also true. :D They basically blackmailed them into moving the games there from Chicago which had originally won the bid.

Those blackmail/cheating claims are rampant. I remember everyone in Paris being angry at London re 2012. So many were claiming bribes because London shouldn't've been considered since they missed the cut off date for application.

The Olympics site selection committee has been nearly as corrupt as FIFA. Allegedly, reforms have been enacted and the worst abuses ended. I doubt it.

It was so barely organized at that point in the game's history, it was really just an extension of the World's Fair being held there that year.

Whats wrong with the games being hosted in Stockholm or Helsinki?
+2
level 70
Jul 17, 2016
I think these comments were based on weather on the mistaken assumption that Sweden, Finland and Russia are permanently frozen. Of course the Olympics are held in summer and as I type this it is 20 degrees Celsius in Helsinki, 22 in Stockholm and 30 in Moscow - perfectly decent temperatures to conduct a sporting event in (possibly a little too hot for comfort in Moscow).

Everyone that comments on how they missed this one or that one, mustn't realise that you can read the comments while taking the quiz. So if people get stuck, they can just scroll down to the comments and that has helped me complete a quiz numerous times!

Why not just print out a google list of Olympic Cities and type them into the quiz .... If your going to cheat at least make it 100%.

Eh? That's cheating! I like to test my knowledge without having to cheat. Then I learn from my mistakes at the end of the quiz.

So for you, the stats should read, "This beats or equals 100% of test takers who didn't cheat." Wow, you are really impressive.

Although it’s cheating, as long as you’re learning, it’s not that bad especially if you came back and did better without reading the comments. I sometimes read the comments, and then the next time I do that quiz I can get the answer without having to look at the comments. And it’s just a quiz website, there are worse things to cheat on.
