I'm in Ireland and I'd be more likely to say persimmon or cachi fruit. Sharon is just a variety of persimmon grown in Israel.

In the UK and Australia for instance, small dried black currants are dried grapes, used to be called Corinth Currants see: ... ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2o0PiApSsE

You should update and expand this quiz, by adding things like dragonfruit, bitter-melon, starfruit, longan (although it looks very similar to lychees on the outside), durian, mangosteen, and snake fruit.

Can you please add granadilla for “passion fruit” because that’s what we call it where I live?

Hmm Where do you live? Here in Peru, granadilla is a waaay different fruit from passion fruit (maracuya). I mean, they are related, but still.

I have a good friend who came back from a research trip in Mexico with tales of a great, mysterious fruit called "maracuja." He was pretty disappointed to find out that that was just Spanish for passion fruit.

I think you should accept redberry or orange for strawberry. Being the minority, we Martians and ex-Martians don't take too kindly to discrimination.

i agree with redberry. I'm very offended by this new form of discrimination.

If you enter gooseberry then the (correct) answer to Red currant is filled in??!??
+2
Level 75
Jul 10, 2018
Yeah, I don't understand that one, either. They are the same family but unless there's another type of gooseberry I'm not familiar with, gooseberries don't grow in clumps like that, they hang by single stems from the canes. We pick ours while still green. Great for pies and jelly, and even better mixed with blueberries for a Blue Goose Pie.

+2

Not really, hardly anyone eats it here. Daily fruits are; apple, orange, banana, mandarin(or tangerine I never know, I believe english uses the same name for different things than we do). (Followed by grapes, strawberry, pear and kiwi and melon in summer).

I ve actually only ever met 1 person mentioning mango, I think here it is more something got fancy foodies, to eat it with their spinach shake. Or in fruit bowls at christmas and wedding receptions.

Why? Strictly speaking, 'kiwi' isn't even the name of the fruit, it's the name of the flightless bird endemic to New Zealand which gives the fruit its name. These are never called 'kiwis' in New Zealand, always 'kiwifruit'.

I think kiwi refers to the bird or the people, not the fruit. Kiwifruit might be more accurate.

In New Zealand, kiwifruit are only called kiwifruit and never kiwi. But it is different in other countries. In NZ, a kiwi is a bird or a person from NZ.

What percentage of the globe has common access to rambutan, quince, red currant, and passion fruit?

I've heard of passion fruit, and I think quince might be a UK thing. I guess rambutan is SEA, and red currants are European.

I guess like most things, familiarity is probably more in response to local price.
