I have over 50 yrs on you and I hadn't a clue...but I've never managed to finish one of his books yet either.... I got the others except for which Khan it was and Edison.
Pretty cool quiz. I have to say though, could you accept Chinggis Khan for Genghis Khan? My AP World History book referred to him only as that, so I'm thinking it's a viable alternate version.
"So far apart"? The king just before Henry VIII was Henry VII, who himself came only 14 years after Henry VI, who succeeded Henry V, who succeeded Henry IV. Basically, between 1399 and 1547 there were about 24 years not ruled by a Henry, and most of that was just Edward IV.
@Djilas - we use the regnal number when we talk about particular kings and queens. Saying King Henry could mean any one of the eight that have been kings of England/Britain (unless context is patently clear).
True, there are two Queen Elizabeth's but the Queen Elizabeth in the picture is the first Queen Elizabeth. Just as if it was King Henry I in the picture, then King Henry would be accepted.
I guess I don't see a problem with how it is now. Everyone feels differently though.
I was hoping henry would work though I knew there were multiple. But then was surprised to see Elizabeth did work. But reading your explanation it makes total sense now :)
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's Kublai Khan, his grandson. G never looked like that. He was all barbarian and stuff. (Also, apparently he had reddish hair.)
Ugh! I spelt Hirohito about every way but the right one apparently, and couldn't spell Guevara either - don't know what I did there! Didn't recognise Douglass or Edison (no, I'm not American) and don't think I've ever seen a picture of Dickens before!
Got 15 out of 20. It's a good random quiz. It took me a few guesses before i got elizabeth I, genghis kahn, douglas and dickens. Don't know who che guevara is though. I actually thought the picture of Van Gogh was that of some historically significant serial killer or some other kind of lunatic..Lol...oops.
I tried this with my students. The only one they could come up with a name for was Che Guevara- the power of being a t-shirt, I guess. They shouted out his name immediately. The others they either had no idea about or struggled with. They came up with "George 1st" for Washington, somebody guessed Queen Victoria for Elizabeth, they thought Van Gogh was a zombie, Hitchcock was Egyptian, someone recognized Earhart from Night at the Museum but did not know her name, and someone else thought that Lenin was Louis XIV. After the answer for Genghis Khan came up they knew who he was, too, but were not able to guess even with an ample number of clues.
In time most young people will only know pop or film stars, their history will be from movies and spelling and maths will be a thing of the past unless helped by electronic gadgets.
We'll only know TikTok influencers and the vapid stars of meaningless Netflix social experimentation shows about love and sex. And nobody will need math skills because AI will trade our NFTs for us. Won't need to know how to drive either because the cars will do it for us or else the drones will just bring us everything we need.
It is a selfportrait painting, not a photgraph, and not even in realistic style, so it doestn say much about how he really looked at the time. This is his own perception/interpretation
I am obviously too tired to be taking this quiz. I missed Shakespeare even though I always know him. And yet I recognized Frederick Douglass even in my overly tired state. At least I can be proud of myself for that.
I thought Hitchcock was Churchill for a moment haha.
Also, this quiz made me realise that I don't think I've ever seen a picture of Dickens before this quiz. Kinda surprising considering he's so well known.
Nice quiz though. I like these historical figure quizzes.
I think there's a more common picture of Dickens that people have seen, (an engraving, I think, rather than a photograph) in which his hair is considerably wilder and free-flowing than the rather staid and trim state in this photograph. I think this is why some people have not recognised him. We've had him on banknotes in Britain.
One of the very best Funny or Die Drunk History sketches ever was Jen Kirkman doing how Frederick Douglass met Abraham Lincoln, in which Don Cheadle's main character point was to have his hair styled exactly like the original - a thickly forested Afro, combed downwards into a parting.
Got them all except for Douglass and Edison. Douglass is the only one I haven't heard of; until now. Tried Confucius and Lao Tzu before I finally guessed it was Gengis Khan.
How in Freud's name is this "Americanized"? There are barely two Americans on here (Elizabeth Taylor is half an answer and was born in London). Two is one more than one, which is one more than zero, which is the lowest number of Americans that could be on the quiz.
I knew who it was but couldn't for the life of me get the spelling close enough. Was using a "k" instead of a "z". Probably influenced by the ex-Green Bay Packers player named Ray.
Not so odd since Gaddafi has been in the news much more recently than Dickens and there are most likely a lot more pictures of him.
And I think, most people who saw this specific picture of him with what he looked like in the end in mind would memorize this just out of shock about how this handsome young man could end up as one of the ugliest guys ever...

on the dust cover of his books.

Same with Van Gogh... I tried Goch, Gock, Gocc, Ghoch, whatever I could imagine how it might spell...

Shame on you!
