I don't know. There may have been an older comment that got purged. But for now I'm going to assume there is a carnivorous clown somewhere in the sewers of NATO. Better safe than sorry.
It is actually a little surprising (to me anyway) that Malta isn't on the list, especially considering how strategically important it was during WWII anyway. It also surprises me that Finland isn't on the list, considering it's historic strife against Russia. You would think that being directly on the Soviet Union's doorstep, and after the Winter War, the Finns would have been quick to jump on the NATO bandwagon!
Well, the U.S. had to choose side in the former Yugoslavia conflict and Serbia was not at that side. Because we were allies in the WW II we felt like we were betreyed. After that there was a bombing party in 1999. We really do not have good feelings about NATO. No one dares to sign such a document that could make Serbia a part of the NATO. It would be a suicidal act for sure.
Nearly didn't get Belgium because I typed Brussels, it didn't come pop, and I decided that meant they weren't in. No idea what was going through my head.
This quiz would have more difficult if it had not been in alphabetical order. Since the North Atlantic touches North America and Europe those are the likely choices. It is a bit confusing since there are more countries then are strictly touching the Atlantic.
Really interesting to see just how many eastern bloc countries have abandoned Russia and joined NATO. The Baltics in particular, and Romania and Bulgaria, must’ve been a real kick in the balls for Russia.
When the USSR placed missiles on the United States' doorstep it almost lead to World War 3. Makes sense that Russia becomes nervous if they are surrounded by NATO members and bases (especially given the fact that there were probably promises not to expand NATO eastwards in 1990). This situation shouldn't make us Westerners thump our chests; we should be cautious.
It is about communism not Russians. Communists do not belong to any nation, that is one of the main characteristics of them. Internationalism. Seems like you do not know basics of this political concept.
NATO was founded to defend against potential aggression by the Soviet Union (Russia) and its satellites. It is in practice a mutual defense treaty which has been invoked against aggressive moves by Iraq (not communist), Bosnia (not communist), Serbia (not communist), the Taleban (not communist), and Libya (also not communist). Not to defend against political ideologies. It's most pressing concern is and always has been the defense of the European members against Russian/Soviet military strength. You can't bomb communism. Educate yourself.
If you're talking about the museum in Budapest that I referenced, yes, it is about communists. Specifically, Russian communists and those aligned with them. I visited twice. The regime in Hungary was not propped up by China or Cuba. and Hungary did not join NATO for fear of being dominated by North Korea or the Ethiopian derg.
Fun fact: Turkey and Greece being in NATO is the only reason there has not been a war between them recently. Of course with Erdogan that might not be the case soon.
It's a positive development for sure when nations can join together in solidarity to oppose attacks on each other. It also increases the legitimacy and security of Macedonia.
There was once a brief window of time during which the US and Yeltsin’s Russia could have reached a full detente and disbanded NATO. Unfortunately, that time has long passed. Putin’s Russia has shown that it does not respect international laws (haha, admittedly tough ground for the US to stand on, but still...) via its annexation of Crimea, so the more countries that can band together against this bullying and blatant disregard for national sovereignty, the better.
Kolji, you have my sympathy. I would ask you not to believe that people who live in Nato countries have no empathy. I too think it was wrong what happened in 1999. However, the nightmare of the former Yugoslavia's disintegration and in particular Srebrenica was the stimulus, the example of what happens when people stand aside peacefully and watch what the UN can manage. I don't believe that Serbians should fear NATO, I don't believe that Russians should either. It is, or certainly should be, a defensive organisation
Man Macedonia starting with N really makes it hard to get aplhabetically. My frist thought for 'between Netherlands and Norway' is not usually Macedonia... Oh well
You asked "What's still in the NATO?"
I responded "It" (is still in the NATO)
Now it makes sense.

and those responsible for delineating boundaries would just do the logical thing and join Europe to Asia. After all, it is one land mass.
