Most French Canadian don't. I did not know the whole first half. And in Québec they do not teach it at school, so most of us only sings it (and even!) at a Hockey game, Thanks to lyrics on the big screen.

I know it in both, but I am from Quebec, where we use mainly the French national anthem. However, the French national anthem that is used throughout Quebec and other French-speaking areas has some English lines that are also in the English version of the anthem, like "God keep our land glorious and free". There is a completely French anthem, but I don't know of a place where that is used. Therefore, your excuse is very weak, and you should know at least part of the English anthem.

Don't feel so bad! As an Anglophone Canadian, I only know the English version. BUT, we really should know BOTH versions, eh? When I was growing up, we didn't even sing the anthem at school, except on Remembrance Day, Canada Day, and at sporting events. What a shame... Heaven forbid our schools should promote NATIONAL PRIDE!!! I was pleased to learn that in Alberta, at least, they sing the anthem daily at school, as it should be :)

O Canada Our home and native land. True patriot love in all thy sons command. With loyal hearts we sing the praise of the true North strong and free. We stand on guard O Canada We stand on guard for Thee O Canada, glorious and free We stand on guard We stand on guard for thee O Canada we stand on guard for thee. They revised it 25 years ago and I still got 7. Not bad for an old Yankee.

"They" didn't revise anything 25 years ago. The last known revision to the official anthem occured in 1914 by Robert S Weir, who composed the original official English lyrics in 1908, two years after Calixa Lavallée composed the original French version. The lyrics you are quoting are an un-official assembly version of the anthem and was never sung as the official anthem.

With all due respect, that is, quite simply, wrong. The current version of “O Canada” was adopted in 1980 when it officially became the country’s national anthem. The line "God keep our land" was never used until then.

Thus I will admit without (too much) shame that I completely failed it, since I honestly don't think I have ever heard it. I have no excuse as to why that is.

If you think "God Save The Queen" is a dirge, you should read the text of the Icelandic national anthem. "Íslands þúsund ár, Íslands þúsund ár! Eitt eilífðar smáblóm með titrandi tár, sem tilbiður guð sinn og deyr." = "Iceland's thousand years, Iceland's thousand year, one small flower of eternity with a quivering tear, that prays to its god and dies." It's a beautiful anthem but not exactly upbeat.

When I lived in Quebec in my youth, we had to learn both the English and French versions. Apparently, the English lyrics are not taught in most Quebec schools, and the French lyrics are certainly not taught in most parts of English Canada today. Pity. Perhaps the Quiz's creator could do an expanded quiz that included both languages.
