I probably heard the anthem first at hockey games (dad used to work for the Capitals) but remember the lyrics better from Terrence and Philip singing it on South Park.

Yeah, not so much for me, I'm american and didn't do so well. I've only heard the music, not the lyrics. :p It's a pretty song

O Canada Our home and native land. True patriot love in all thy sons command. With loyal hearts we sing the praise of the true North strong and free. We stand on guard O Canada We stand on guard for Thee O Canada, glorious and free We stand on guard We stand on guard for thee O Canada we stand on guard for thee. They revised it 25 years ago and I still got 7. Not bad for an old Yankee.

"They" didn't revise anything 25 years ago. The last known revision to the official anthem occured in 1914 by Robert S Weir, who composed the original official English lyrics in 1908, two years after Calixa Lavallée composed the original French version. The lyrics you are quoting are an un-official assembly version of the anthem and was never sung as the official anthem.

With all due respect, that is, quite simply, wrong. The current version of “O Canada” was adopted in 1980 when it officially became the country’s national anthem. The line "God keep our land" was never used until then.

100%, from the USA. Listened to a lot of hockey games on the radio growing up. Canadians are always impressed that I can sing their national anthem and name their prime minister (even if they often cringe when I say his name).

Reading this, I think both the Canadian and U.S. anthems are so much better than the dirge which is the British anthem. Land of hope and glory would be so much better.

If you think "God Save The Queen" is a dirge, you should read the text of the Icelandic national anthem. "Íslands þúsund ár, Íslands þúsund ár! Eitt eilífðar smáblóm með titrandi tár, sem tilbiður guð sinn og deyr." = "Iceland's thousand years, Iceland's thousand year, one small flower of eternity with a quivering tear, that prays to its god and dies." It's a beautiful anthem but not exactly upbeat.

The Canadian anthem has been changed from thy son's to thus for political correctness. Credits to Justin Trudeau and gender neutralness

I almost aced this one thanks to Rush with Terrance and Phillip on the South Park movie. I didn't know that the "all thy sons" line had recently been changed. Political correctness is pure insanity. I guess time will tell if the Star Spangled Banner in the US will be edited, changed, or just banned outright as hate speech.

Do countries use national anthems at anything but sporting events? In the US, you never hear the national anthem anywhere else. You hear other patriotic songs places (especially "God Bless America"), but the anthem is pretty much only in sports.
