Yes, I have heard both "birthplace of presidents" and "birthplace of astronauts." The presidents one is rarer in my experience, probably because Ohio is still second to Virginia in presidents, and because most of Ohio's presidents, frankly, were not memorable. And those who were memorable were memorable for the wrong reasons.
"Birthplace of aviation" has is on a lot of Ohio license plates. There's a feud between us and North Carolina whose motto is "first in flight" because the Wright brothers were from Ohio and built their planes there, but traveled to North Carolina to test it.
I think the motto is "Birthplace of Modern Presidents" or something similar since most of the presidents from Virginia served during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Also kept trying birthplace of "flight" instead of "aviation". Grrrrr....
Technical point, but not all of the students killed at Kent State were protesters. Sandra Scheuer was merely walking between classes. Some reports state that was also the case with William Schroeder. Allison Krause and Jeffrey Miller were protesting.
The young man shown lying face down in the famous photo from that day was Jeffrey Miller, who had been shot and died instantly.
It definitely wasn't particularly important in the last 2 elections, but this may have just happened because some of Donald Trump's rhetoric was designed to appeal to Rust Belt voters. It could become a swing state again if we return to more "standard" Republican candidates.
I don't know. It's a pretty white state. As Democrats cater more and more to social justice and racial equity issues, I think you'll see the Rust Belt push right. Those people feel forgotten. Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania (along with Georgia) went to Biden because black people voted in record numbers -- probably because Biden is so popular with the black community and because Trump spent four years belittling racial grievance and mocking the Black Lives Matter movement. Unless Democrats can repeat that level of turnout in future elections, which I personally think is unlikely, the Rust Belt will push right as the Sun Belt pushes left. Ohio is already the most predictably red state in that region, so I think it's set in stone now, unless Democrats start prioritizing unions again (shout out to Marty Walsh!). Just one man's opinion.
I mean, after the election I heard a statistic that one-third of black men in the Midwest voted for Trump (source). It might be hard to believe, but I think the fact that many black men work blue-collar jobs and are already distrustful of the establishment may have drawn some of them to Trump. Also, even if Ohio is very white in rural areas, cities like Cleveland and Cincinnati have tons of black people. Even if most of voters who swung from Obama to Trump are white, I wouldn't discount this small but notable shift in the black vote.
High five! Though I am from The Ruhr, and everyone on here only knows us by that term. I'd be surprised if anyone could actually name 3 cities from here.
When I saw television show and music, my first thought was WKRP in Cincinnati. (Yes, I know it's not a musical which is why my second thought was the correct answer.) I think any television show which popularized the Silver Sow award deserves a mention in this quiz.
