"Germany" was not a country in 1972.

True, it was in fact West Germany. This should be changed.

Agreed. Lack of consistency if Yugoslavia and USSR are included but then West Germany is not.

West Germany will work but @dunkinggandalf's tireless advocacy has convinced me that Germany and West Germany are the same country. And no, this is not the same as Yugoslavia and the USSR.

It may be the same country, but it had a different name. The UK is the same country as the former Kingdom of Great Britain, but it wouldn't be accurate to call the latter the UK. Furthermore, from what I understand Soviet Union and Yugoslavia were legally succeeded by Russia and Serbia & Montenegro when the former ones broke up. So they're all the same really.

It didn't have a different name though. Officially, it was Bundesrepublik Deutschland before and after reunification (which I guess was an absorption of East Germany). But I do agree; to retrospectively call it simply Germany is like referencing contemporary South Korea as simply Korea just because they absorb North Korea in the (hypothetical) future.

If you want to split a hair, then you should note that Federal Republic of Germany has the same name (and is the same country) since 1949. That country was enlarged in 1990, because German Democratic Republic joined (!) the FRG. But Germany, or officialy FRG (which was, and still is the official name of that country) has different name (and political system, and area, too) from the German Reich, which organized 1936 Olympics. So, quizmaster was right to do as he did. Just one other thing: you can not compare the situation with Germany, because FRG is the same as FRG that existed from 1949 to 1990, and is the successor state for GDR to the situation of USSR, Yugoslavia or Czechoslovakia, because those countries dissolved and do not exist any more.

Hey Arguhuh, You may not want to mention about North Korea being absorbed by South Korea...I happen to know that Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un regularly visits this site and always get 100% on every quiz he takes. He becomes very insecure when you mention North Korea being absorbed by the South.

West Germany and modern day Germany have the same official title (Federal Republic of Germany) and the same constitution, The country that was West Germany, never ceased to exist, like the country that was east Germany (Democratic Republic of Germany) did.

Ugh, not that again. If you want to be that specific call "East Germany" German Democratic Republic (GDR) and "West Germany" Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). It is still the FRG. Just "Germany" is just as correct as "West Germany" which is an English term of something no German would ever say. "East Germany" could be named GDR but is it really necessary.

Not really, the USSR ceased to exist, so it would be wrong to say "Russia" to the USSR. West Germany (which Munich is in), never ceased to exist, "West Germany" was just the none official title of the Federal Republic of Germany, a country, that today, under the same name and constitution, is known most commonly as "Germany".

Turned out I knew all the answers after all.

By the way, the Kingdom of Great Britain is not the same as the UK. UK is short for United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Kingdom of Great Britain only referred to the Union of the Crowns of Scotland and England (which included Wales, and therefore the entire island of Great Britain). UK only came into being in 1801, the Kingdom of Great Brtain preceded it. They are not the same thing now, nor will they ever be in future and never were in the past.

Woah, I didn't realize that up until 1992 they hosted both games in the same year. I almost wish they still did that, but I understand the Olympic committee probably makes more money by alternating the years and it also allows the diehards that go to the Olympics to save up enough money for the next bout of events..(which are probably just wealthy people anyways, so maybe not)

I think the reason that it was changed was that the Summer Olympics tended to overshadow the same year's Winter Olympics. By separating them, the Winter Olympics got more interest.
