Totally drew a blank on Oscar Wilde. Knew who it was but the name eluded me.

the same thing happened to me with Andy Warhol

For some reason, every time I see a picture of Warhol, the name Woody Allen comes to me before his actual name does. Every single time. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Personally, I'm not sure about actors and actresses as 'historical' figures. Charlie Chaplin, yeah, the rest hhhmmmmmm.

QM's call though.

If Charlie Chaplin counts then Audrey Hepburn surely does, too.

Audrey Hepburn had a key subsequent role as a charity ambassador after she had finished acting, so she probably has more right to be there.

"El Duce" and "The Desert Fox" didn't work very well.......

I know what you mean, but if you start discounting people who were famous for x rather than y, where does it end?

Oliver Cromwell, warts and all...

It tickles me the way Rommel is looking at Wilde. I would imagine Oscar would have had some choice epithets for the Nazis.

Well...who knew Mussolini looked kinda like Dwayne The Rock Johnson.
+6
Level 73
Apr 23, 2018
I don't really see any resemblance to the Rock. To me he just looks like the semihuman embodiment of arrogance and contempt.
+4
Level 78
Apr 7, 2019
Semihuman sounds awfully similar to subhuman, a word which Mussolini's friend Hitler liked to use.

Of which they used to describe groups of people, rather than individuals. You do understand the difference right?
+1
Level 73
Feb 7, 2022
Yeah, I would argue that Hitler himself was subhuman(e), in the sense that he was severly lacking in humanity.

Khomeini's first name is Ruhollah. "Ayatollah" is just a title, like "bishop" or "pope".

Yep, I thought I was a bit lucky typing in Ayatollah! It is just a title!

Becouse "K" in Khomeini is silence and also in many languages there is Homeini maybe you can accept this version

Not in Farsi or English its not...

Exactly. In fact, the 'Kh' reperesents a unique letter in Arabic and Farsi that has no english equivalent, hence why some people pronounce it as Johnson said, but that sound is present in most Germanic languages as well as Old English, which Modern English simply lost along the way (Some of it is left in languages like Welsh and Scots. examples: Loch - Scots, meaning Lake, Achtung - German, meaning Attention, and Dacht - Dutch, meaning thought [notice the similarity... once the 'd' became a 'th', which was classic Anglo-Saxon thing, only the vowel is different and the 'gh' is a remnant from when the word was actually pronounced with this guttural sound in Old English!]). It's basically the sound you make when gathering up phlegm before spitting. Come to think of it... I see why the English thought it wasn't worth it.

I'm proud of myself for getting Rommel, truly a fascinating historical figure

Yes, Rommel set up a great spy-ring in Egypt and North Africa, mostly using Nile women (polite term) to ferret information from the British pen-pushers in Cairo and elsewhere. Unfortunately for him once they found where the leaks were coming from he lost his 'Magical' powers.

The main source of Axis intelligence was from the US military attache in Cairo - Bonner Fellers. It was carelessness rather than deliberate but was disastrous for the Commonwealth forces.
