Is there a draft in Israel? My understanding was that ALL Jewish Israeli citizens have to go through compulsory military service when they reach 18, men I think for 3 years and women for 2? (meaning all Israeli 18-19 year old females are in the IDF; this + the fact that Israelis are among the most attractive people on Earth = IDF hands down the hottest armed forces on average in the world) Though people can get exceptions for various reasons. I think the ultra-Orthodox Jews can be exempt. Druze and Circassians are usually mandated to enlist even though they're not really Jewish. Muslim and Christian citizens of Israel are not required to enlist but they are allowed to volunteer and some do.

There is not a lottery or random selection process, if that's what you mean.

In this case draft simply means "conscription", and doesn't imply a drawing such as what happened in the U.S. during Vietnam.

okay. I just wouldn't use the word draft to describe universal mandatory military service.

Draft is commonly used to refer to any system of conscription, whether the Vietnam-era U.S. lottery or conscription in the world wars for any power.

that may well be true. But when I think of draft or conscription in my mind I don't think of universal compulsory military service. I think more of something that is either random or else a one-time thing used during war time to rapidly expand the size of a military. Other countries also have compulsory universal military service, like Syria (though they exempt women). I wouldn't think of what happens in Syria as a draft, either. Perhaps the word associations and connotations in my brain are odd.

Good thing the answer to this quiz is about the reality of the situation in the world and not what Kalbahamut's brain's free association turns up then, huh?

It is also a city in Israel as well as being a municipality in Belgium. Many places in the west have Israeli names because of their biblical connotation.

Good quiz! The term "ultra-Orthodox Jewish population" seems a bit hard to define though. What constitutes an "ultra-Orthodox Jewish" person and how can their growth be measured exactly?

and their growth is measured by counting how many of them there are year-to-year. They tend to have a lot of kids.

Great quiz! I have been to Israel, and it's probably just as diverse (if not more) than the U.S. Some great people there, all of whom have fascinating but harrowing histories. I noticed that many Israelis have become disenfranchised by the rightward shift in politics since President Begin. It's a real shame that the government (supported by the majority of people) has become so apartheidic toward the Palestinians. I remember one elderly Israeli telling me "We are supposed to be God's chosen ones? Why us? Look at what we do to them."

Natalie Portman was also born in Israel. Maybe that would make for a trickier question than Gal Gadot?

Idk, Natalie Portman is more famous I'd say. I knew she was Israeli, I didn't knew Gal Gadot was (anything).

On another note. Some strange questions:

"Israel is thought to have nuclear weapons"

WHO thinks this? The answer to this question could be yes no matter the country.

"Israel has one of world's highest life expectancies"

Ok... So does Uganda, Chad or North Korea. "one of the worlds" means nothing (except that it's in this world). Israel is on place 12.

It means something. For example I could say, "this is one of the most pedantic comments I've read on this site." Let's say that there were 10 million comments left on the site in total. Could we conclude that this comment was the 10 millionth most pedantic? Obviously not. The 9 millionth? No, clearly. Maybe the 4 millionth most pedantic? That would be a big stretch and everyone would understand that, but, maybe if I was being a bit of a weasel with my language. Most people would understand that it was at least in the top million - top 10% or so. Chad has the lowest life expectancy in the world, so anyone claiming that they had "one of the world's highest" would obviously be full of poo.

"However, Arab citizens of Israel cannot be drafted"

This is false, Druze citizens of Israel which are ethnically Arab often serve in the IDF
