Countries of Europe in 1848

Can you name the countries, which existed during the revolution of 1848?
If you can't think of any more countries, try modern states or cities. They might have been countries in 1848.

Update of the 4th March, 2021: now a little more difficult due to inclusion of formerly grey countries. The insanely hard ones (Roquebrune and Menton) are still given and Anhalt is still combined, because the map would be way too confusing.

Personally I like being able to think long and hard on this one. I hope you leave the time as is. After all, once you run out of ideas, you run out. You could guess all the current countries and not get 100%, so I'm not sure what the benefit of time reduction on this quiz would be.

Um...That red line shows the border of the Holy Roman Empire. That stopped existing in 1805 after Austerlitz. Show either the border of the actual German Empire, the Zollverein, or don't show anything at all.

Those are the correct borders of the German Empire. The HRE looks completely different. This is what the HRE looks like: www.jetpunk.com/user-quizzes/319978/cities-in-the-holy-roman-empire-with-map. I don't mean the Zollverein but the German Empire: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Empire_(1848%E2%80%9349).

I'm talking about the German Confederation. The German Confederation and the HRE are two totally different things. Here are some maps for proof:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Confederation#/media/File:German_Confederation_1815.svg

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Empire#/media/File:German_Empire_1914.svg

Your map looked like the first one, which is the German Confederation

In the article from which you took that image: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Empire it says in the first sentence, that this article and therefore also the map refer to the German Empire (there are two with that name) which existed from 1871 to 1918. "My German Empire" is the shortlived empire which existed from 1848 to 1849.

German federation and the shortlived german empire (1848-1849) are exactly the same. They are only named different and have a different governing/state structure.

This German Empire (48-49) can be seen as an early try for German Unification, but it was struck down by the two major states, Austria and Prussia. After then the German Federation was restored, and lived on until 1866, when the North German Confederation was created.

So when talking about the year 1848 specifically, it's both the German Federation and the German Empire

How is Menton insanely difficult but not Schwarzburg etc? With a dot near Monaco I'd eventually guess it.
+7
Level 74
Mar 22, 2021
Menton doesn't even have a Wikipedia article, it's sovereignty is disputable and it was only "sovereign" for a very short period of time. Schwarzburg on the other hand is large enough to actually be visible on the map, has a Wikipedia article, it's sovereignty is undisputable and most importantly, it existed for more than 300 years.

Hi, I love the quiz but I ask you to change the name "Sardinia", or at least to allow the alternatives "Kingdom of Sardinia", "Regno di Sardegna" or even "Kingdom of Piedmont", all of which are more correct, xpecially for 1848. THANX!

It is listed under "Kingdoms". For those you can always imagine a "Kingdom of" in front of the listed name. I will be more lenient on the type-ins though.

Great Quiz, but you got something in the description wrong: the red line doesn't depict the German Empire, but the German Confederation. The German Empire didn't occur until the entirety of the former German Confederation (minus the Austrian parts) were unified under prussian rule by Otto von Bismarck in 1871.

Thank you. Please read the before comments, where I have thoroughly explained, that the German Empire I am referring to is the one that existed from 1848 to 1849.
+1
Level 53

It... didn't exist though. Yes, the nationalist and democratic movements tried to create one by offering the king of Prussia the title and crown of Kaiser of Germany, but since he declined, a democratic united German Empire like they imagined in the Paulskirche never came to pass. Plus, the actions of the german revolutionaries and the upcoming "Empire" weren't recognized internationally (which ultimately caused the restorative forces to invade and topple the democratic "government" of the not-yet-existing "german empire".So even though they planned to create one, they failed at doing so.

I never said that the German Empire I am referring to is a serious nation. You can be especially sure of that, since I would have otherwise made it the country listed, instead of having all the micronations.
+1
Level 53
Mar 29, 2021
Why are you doing it then? It's factually wrong, so just don't call it an empire if it wasn't one. Your map is perfect, why would you ruin your historical credibility like that by knowingly mislabeling one of the most important places in europe at that time?

You are right that there was a strong connection between them, but the connection was a personal union and not a real union, in whose case I would be obliged to combine them, but a personal union is not tight enough in my opinion.

Love this kind of quiz. One thing though: Andorra is incorrectly classified as a republic. It should be either in "principalities" or in "others" (it was a co-principality, meaning it had two princes that shared sovereignty over the land)

In 1848 Venice and its territories were part of the "Regno Lombardo-Veneto", a puppet-state/province of the Austrian Empire, just as Lombardy was.

The Republic of San Marco shortly existed in that year because it was startig the italian "Risorgimento" with the first italian war of independence between the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Austrian Empire.
