The UK isnt synonymous with England, as England is one of four kingdoms within the United Kingdom. Scotland is its own kingdom, yet still attached to the UK.
+5
Level 82

If we're going to be pedantic, there is only one kingdom in the UK - the United Kingdom of its name. The Principality of Wales and the fiefs of the Marcher Lords were incorporated into the Kingdom of England in the 16th century. In 1707 the Kingdoms of England (now including Wales) and Scotland were amalgamated by the Treaty of Union to become the Kingdom of Great Britain. Then, in 1801, the Acts of Union united the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland into the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Finally, in 1922 most of Ireland left, leaving only the province of Northern Ireland. But if you're talking about their status before union, then only England and Scotland were kingdoms - most of modern Wales was a principality and Northern Ireland is just two thirds of the old Irish province of Ulster.

The PISA one is quite misleading - the "China" scores selectively include only the wealthiest areas of China, which unsurprisingly do very well on the tests. Certainly if a broader swathe of China were included, I'm highly doubtful they would rank anywhere near as high.

The current account balance one was confusing ( definitely for a non englsih speaker) especialy with the time ticking, it threw me. Normal I glance over sentence and only need a few words to allready realizing the question. But after reading this one 3 times I still didnt have it, so I needed to slowly read, but with te clock ticking I couldnt, so kept trying to get it fast, which didnt work. No time to let it sink in and wrap my head around the concept.

Feb 19, 2020
The US is smaller on most measures. The US government typically includes coastal and inland waters, which are excluded in the measurements of the size of China. Using any like-for-like comparison, China is marginally larger than the US. Pretty much only US government sources (like CIA World Factbook) say otherwise.

Well I dunno about Brazil, but most of the iron ore we dig up here in Oz goes to China anyway. I always thought it might be easier to just sell the state of WA to China and be done with it, rather than digging it up and shipping it in pieces. I reckon we could get a pretty good price for it and wipe out our government debt. Of course the terms of the sale would include a proviso that the Chinese had to take Gina Rinehart off our hands too, so that could be a deal-breaker.

What else could it possibly mean? It seemed pretty straightforward to me. Why would it mean lowest average elevation if the clue doesn't use the word average?

And if it did mean average, then China would never be on the list since it includes the Himalayas.
