Please accept Athabascan and Athabaskan; these are very common spellings and I spent a lot of time trying various Alaska Native community names wondering why it wouldn't take either of those spellings. Thank you.
I normally don't care about this kind of stuff, but was curious about how others did on this one. The stats distribution is laughable. More than half of quiz takers got 11 or less, yet 7.5% of quiz takers (28 people as of today) got them ALL? A quiz in which only 7 total answers have even 50% of people get correct? Combined with the fact that not a single person got between 157-186 correct tells me that we have a clear subset of users who just look at the results and type in all the answers to get their 5 points. To each their own, but it's interesting to say the least.
Yeah, I don't really get the point of "cheating" on these quizzes either, but I think that some (not all of course) of the 14-and-under crowd tends to view anything online as yet another game to win. (I was just shocked that my measly little 20/187 got me 3 points!!!)
Like, if I want to learn all 193 countries, I might open up 2 windows: 1st with jetpunk quiz map; 2nd with a world map with the names of all countries on it.
Then enter them one-by-one, repeatedly, until I had more and more memorized.
But I am doubtful that a significant portion of the population is going to prioritize learning/memorizing 187 tribes. Of course, it's not the general population here- it's jetpunk users, and those who probably sought it out by searching 'tribe America'.
My guess is some ocd type thing or just general enjoyment from filling out forms/charts/data whatever.
I do wish we could discriminate between the true answers and people using aides, just for my own curiosity.
as a 15 year old i don't cheat even if i would i'd probably still not get all of them im a pretty slow typer i got 32 mainly from around the Appalachian mountain range because my family is part native american andi also live around there im also taking classes about the natives right now so that helped me out and i am mad though i should've got wyandotte but i kept spelling it as wyandott
Got the Micmac because I just read Pet Sematary. Got another half dozen because I've read all the Lonesome Dove books. The rest I got came from bashing in as many states, cities and rivers as I could think of.
I am a bit surprised Cherokee wasn't the most common answer.
Sad commentary about the knowledge of the tribes (myself included), probably the largest minority in America that doesn't make trouble on a national scale. When I attended a first pow-wow I was surprised to observe prominent display of the American flag, plus an opening prayer that reflected strong Christian characteristics, and an over-all friendly and welcoming spirit. Considering history, brought tears to my eyes.
Can't help but feel that it's a bit of a cop out to accept Iroquois when you have already included Mohawk, Cayuga, Onandaga, Oneida and Seneca, I'd have gotten a higher percentage if you didn't. If you do include Iroquois at least accept haudenosaunee considering that's what they call themselves.
Cooper didn't get rid of all of them. Many of them settled in Stockbridge, MA, but after being resettled in Wisconsin they joined with the Munsees and according to Wikipedia are federally recognized as the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. I didn't see any of those names on the list.
The Lumbee of North Carolina have state recognition. The lack of federal recognition is the result of a mixture of factors: racial definitions of "Native American," oppositional lobbying by the Eastern Band of Cherokee, and old-fashioned neglect by the federal government.
There are a number of spelling weirdnesses. The Miwok and Me-Wuk are the same tribe, and are usually spelled Mi-Wuk (as in Mi-Wuk Village, Tuolumne County, California). Ojibwe and Chippewa are different realizations of the same name, Kumiai is a common spelling of Kumeyaay, and Dakota and Lakota are both one tribe of the Great Sioux Nation.
Interesting quiz, but can you please expand the type-ins a little? I tried Yaqui without Pascua, Wyandot without TE, and I thought I tried every combination of Cs, Ks and Qs on Micmac, but apparently not with just Cs.
If you list Pima as "Akimel O'odham" then you should list Papago as "Tohono O'odham" as that's what they call themselves (as they consider Papago to be a slur)
If your source is Wikipedia, then you should include Bannocks and Mandans, since they are listed on Wikipedia. There may be others, too--I just can't think of any at the moment.
