Verse 1
A long, long time ago
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died

Chorus
So bye, bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
And them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singin', "This will be the day that I die
This will be the day that I die"

Verse 2
Did you write the book of love
And do you have faith in God above
If the Bible tells you so
Do you believe in rock and roll
Can music save your mortal soul
And can you teach me how to dance real slow
Well I know that you're in love with him
'Cause I saw you dancin' in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues
I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died

Verse 3
Now for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rolling stone
But that's not how it used to be
When the jester sang for the king and queen
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And a voice that came from you and me
Oh and while the king was looking down
The jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned
And while Lennon read a book on Marx
The quartet practiced in the park
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died
Verse 4
Helter skelter in the summer swelter
The bird flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight miles high and falling fast
It landed foul on the grass
The players tried for a forward pass
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast
Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune
We all got up to dance
Oh, but we never got the chance
Cause the players tried to take the field
The marching band refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died

Verse 5
Oh, and there we were all in one place
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again
So come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
'Cause fire is the devil's only friend
Oh and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in hell
Could break that Satan's spell
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

Verse 6
I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
She just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play
And in the streets, the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
Not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died

The "Music Died" at the end of the first verse isn't blanked out, but given in brackets. Also, I always thought it was 'last plane' to continue the reference to the death of Buddy Holly, etc. Been singing it wrong for years.

Average score: 48/84. My score: 79/84. Points earned = 3/5. I understand the mechanics behind JetPunk points, but it sure doesn't make any sense. If they're going to integrate a points system, it should be based on how well you do, regardless of the comparison to everyone else.

With the fuzzy sounds from our radios back then I'm surprised we actually got any of the lyrics correct. I'm often amazed when hearing the oldies on the clear channels now, at how badly we botched so many lyrics.

100% easily, I love this song. And by the way, it's "Lenin" as in Vladimir Lenin, not "Lennon."
+14
Level 67
May 11, 2016
No, McLean has very purposely avoided clarifying whether the lyric references John Lennon or Vladimir Lenin. Lennon's worldview had Marxist tendencies, and when one considers that the song itself is a paean to the music of that age, it's easy to think it could be John Lennon. The "jester" is thought to be Bob Dylan, and the fifth verse is thought to reference the Rolling Stones' concert at Altamont ("Jack Flash"...as in "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "no angel born in hell" as in the Hell's Angels, who famously did security detail and murdered a crowd member at that show.

Plus the quartet mentioned in the next line is the Beatles. Also, Lenin had been dead for a while, so him doing anything during the '60s would be unlikely.

It's a great song, but not for karaoke. Karaoke isn't like a concert, where the people go expecting to sit and listen. They go expecting to participate. Doing a 7 1/2 minute song at karaoke is very inconsiderate, IMO.

Them good ol' boys were not drinking "whisky AND rye". Rye IS whisky. (that would be like saying they were drinking soda and Pepsi, which wouldn't make any sense) They were drinking "whisky IN Rye", as in Rye, NY. As in, the town about 4-5 miles from New Rochelle, NY, where Don McLean was born. Listen carefully. He's not saying "and", he's saying "in".

Genius hedges all its bets and has it as “whiskey ‘n rye”! Quizmaster and/or burntfrost, maybe this is a line to be generous, and allow both ‘and’ and ‘in’ (and ‘n’, for that matter)?

Had no trouble finishing this one (I'm of the right age, I suppose), but I did learn that I've been singing a line in the third verse wrong for 48 years. Always thought it was "the court kept practice in the park" (because he was just singing about a courtroom that was adjourned). You learn something new every day!

According to hand-written lyrics from Don McLean that have gone up for auction, it's actually "Lennin" reading the book on Marx. Presumably, he was purposefully keeping it ambiguous.

(Oh, and for those saying otherwise, the quiz is very much correct with "whiskey and rye," confirmed in both the 2016 manuscript above and in the original 1970-ish manuscript that was sold at Christie's.)
