These links say it's love: http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/Love+makes+the+world+go+round, and

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Makes_the_World_Go_%27Round_%281958_song%29

The second link refers to the Perry Como song from the 1950s.

I've definitely heard that one many times. At least as often as Money. Plus, it's a nicer sentiment

Isn't it better TO light a candle than curse the darkness?
+7
Level 77
Oct 28, 2013
Nope...it's telling you what to. First, you better light a candle. Then, curse the darkness. As in "$*&% you darkness! I've got a candle!" :-)

No platitude, you're wrong. Buck has things in order...first "this", thEn "that"

Hahaha. No reason why it can't be that way either, as long as the overall goal is met: that you got a candle (and lit it).

@DiscoBayGolfer, yes, but the clue in the quiz uses 'than,' meaning that his explanation doesn't quite work. That's what I meant by failing on the than/then difference.

I've never heard 'distance' used in that phrase - only 'absence' (and, in response to an earlier comment - I'm from the UK so I don't think it's a UK/US thing).

If you google "makes the world go round", LOVE is what comes up, first and often It is what I've always heard. There is also a song by The Stylistics, People Make the World Go Round. I never heard the expression about money. It doesn't show up in the first two pages of the google search. Even Dead Kennedys song, Kinky Sex Makes the World Go Round shows up before money.
