I recognise George Burns' face but his name doesn't ring any bells. Someone save me a google trip....

No idea who Stamos and Mandell are, i guess I missed whatever they are famous for, they look like actors so could be I didn't watch wahtever they were in.

George Burns was one of the old-school comic/vaudeville showmen in the vein of Milton Berle. He was famous for like 60 years, and had his own show in the 50's. I have no idea why he is listed among "1980's celebrities." He is an 80's celebrity in the same way that Harrison Ford is a 2010's celebrity.

In the 1980s, George Burns was famous for being ridiculously old, still funny, and for smoking cigars and drinking. I'm not a George Burns expert but I would guess that he was much more famous in the 80s than he was in the 50s.

George Burns, for decades, said he would play the London Palladium on his 100th birthday. He continued to perform until just before that day when his health suddenly declined and he died soon after reaching 100. One of the true class acts.

He was also known as part of the comic duo Burns and Allen, with his wife, Gracie Allen, who always played the addle-brained wife to Burns' straight man. It was a big hit on radio and they later moved it to TV. I would have thought he belonged more in the 1970s, though. That's when he won his Oscar for The Sunshine Boys and starred in Oh, God!

No. I was very little in the 80s and he was in a film where he switched bodies with an h.s kid. He was famous so was Bob hope- for decades. I thought he was funny at five.

Johns Stamos was on the original Full House - He was Uncle Jesse. He was also known for being a good looking guy, briefly married to Heather Locklear, I think.

Howie Mandel was a stand up comic who is probably best known as the host of Deal or No Deal.

^^ In other words, no one has seen her except the fraction of a percentage of the people around NYC who go to Broadway all the time. To include her on a list of 20 people who were ever famous at any point is a stretch. Her backup singer became more famous as Al Bundy's wife and on Futurama and Sons of Anarchy.

@someone, you have to be kidding. Bette Midler is mega-famous. She has won Grammys, Emmys, Tonys, Golden Globes (no Oscars, I don't think -- but she has definitely been nominated). She has sold a ton of albums, been in hit movies, and is a star on Broadway. She's more of an all-purpose entertainer like Barbra Streisand or Liza Minnelli, which is less common nowadays, when people are famous for their "brands" more than anything else. But the notion that it's a stretch to call her famous is ridiculous. Look her up. The woman is an icon.

That's what you get for trying to support your statement with facts. Bette Midler may not be as famous as Michael Jackson, Justin Bieber, or Jesus, but she is definitely famous. The fact that you remember a couple (!) of her songs as well as her name is even better proof. I'm definitely not a fan of her but was aware of her since childhood, and I'm not even American. Famous means widely known. If random people around the world have heard of her, that fits the definition.

Comparing her fame to Barbara Streisand and Liza Minnelli perfectly sums it up. Very famous to a narrow slice of the population.

Alf would be a better symbol of the 1980s.

This is absurd. All three of those women are very famous. The fact that you appear ignorant of musicals and singers of that stripe doesn't mean they're not famous. It means you're lacking in an area of knowledge. I'm not a particular fan of any one of those women, and I can think of ten different ways I know each of them, just based on how ubiquitous they are. Hell, there's even a term called "the Streisand Effect." Bette Midler guest-starred on Seinfeld, where there was a whole plot built around how famous she is. It's fine if you don't know anything about that area. If there were photos of Formula One drivers or soccer players, I would have no idea who they are. But that doesn't mean they can't be very famous.

I have to agree that, while she is famous, she isn't anywhere near as famous as she was in the 80s. I haven't seen or heard anything from or about her since the 80s. Those of us in the midwest (that also don't live in or around Chicago) don't get many opportunities to see live musicals due to the fact that there just aren't that many to see in person where we live. Also, musicals are not as universally popular as movies and TV. So, while many of you no doubt see yourselves as more cultured for having known her work outside of mainstream movies and TV, I still agree that for some of us she seems to have disappeared from the public eye. It is a perfectly understandable response for some. I also have to agree about Minelli and Streisand. Both are celebrities that I haven't seen or heard anything about for decades. Again, I have seen one musical in person in my lifetime so that could explain it.

He was in a small, little indie film shot in the Tribeca neighborhood that most people missed called "Ghostbusters". Even though there were sequels in 1989, 2016, 2021, it's theme song hit #1 in multiple countries, spawned a cartoon series, had a breakfast cereal, and was even parodied in Stranger Things, it's pretty forgettable. Easy to miss.

The person you're responding to has made a flurry of comments this past week, none of which seem to be in any way moored to reality. I don't know if he's intentionally trolling or if there's something else going on. But, yeah, obviously, Murray was a huge celebrity of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. But his biggest decade undoubtedly was the 80s.
