Nice quiz. You could add the Channel Islands (UK) which were under Nazi occupation from June 1940 until May 1945.

Iceland was occupied by Nazi Germany from 1940 until 1944.

Iceland was never occupied by Germany. It was in fact invaded by the UK, to prevent German invasion and occupation. Channel islands were definitely under occupation though, and are part of the UK now.

The Channel Islands aren't part of the UK and never have been. Like the Isle of Man they're a Crown Dependency. It's quite an odd relationship.

So when I invade the Channel Islands I do not attack the UK and the NATO? It is just the Queen and her order of knights which would fight the invaders?

@TheLastFish The Channel Islands are Crown Dependencies that belong to the United Kingdom, but are not part of it.

@TheLastFish, interesting question. The UK is responsible for the defence of the Channel Islands, but I don't know if that means that NATO would consider an invasion of Jersey as meriting a NATO response since technically it wouldn't be an invasion of a member state.

That said, diplomatically it would be quite hard for NATO to blithely ignore it...

+4

well it depends on Who invades the channel islands. I am sure a russian attack will not be ignored by the NATO. I am also sure a french attack will detonate a thermonuclear response.

The southern part of France was controlled by Germany - just not directly. It was under occupation from Vichy France, which was a puppet government of the Nazis, but it wasn't directly administered by them.

In November 1942 Germany DIRECTLY controlled most parts of France, just some parts where instead controlled by Italy (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3c/FranceOccupee.jpg). It all comes down to which arbitrary date "peak in 1942" refers.

Many more areas of Europe were under Axis occupation, but are not included in this quiz because they were governed by Germany's allies/puppet states. Greece, for example, was divided into German, Italian and Bulgarian occupation zones, which is why you only see bits and pieces of it on the map.

In 1944, Germany took direct control of Rome and much of Italy after the Italians tried to make peace with the Allies. Agree that the 1942 "maximum extent" is certainly arbitrary.

Yugoslavia was divided between Germany (taking northern Slovenia and most of Serbia), Hungary (taking northern Croatia and Serbia), Italy (taking some of the Croatian coast, southern Slovenia, western Macedonia and Montenegro) and a puppet state called the "Independent [sic] State of Croatia".

Jul 6, 2020
They did advance between September and November 1942 to the Caucasus. German Panzers were halted near Ordzhonikidze on 2 November 1942 before reaching their target of Grozny. If the territory between Rostov and Stalingrad is included in the map then the area to the south up to the Caucasus mountains and bounded by Novorossiysk, Maikop and Alagir (all of which were taken by the Germans during their advance) should also be included

But isn't that the whole reason the quiz gets featured? The user puts lots of hard work into the map and then as a reward they often get featured.

Level 62
Aug 20, 2020
Disagree. Although the svg would have taken a lot of work and is visually appealing, it sorta defeats the point of the quiz- to test your knowledge of history. With the Map- this series becomes just another quiz of naming the countries shown on the map- which is an unnecessary geogrophization.

Eh, I mean, most people know the Nazis' conquest was in Europe, and the answers in quizzes are usually alphabetized, so I'm not sure how much easier the map makes it. I think it adds a nice dimension because it highlights just how vast the Nazi Empire was. It's pretty staggering to think one country could occupy all that land in the twentieth century. I think being informative is more important than being hard, and I appreciate the perspective this map provides.

Wonder why Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, Croatia, Albania and Bosnia-Hertzegovina were excluded? Germany controlled whole Balkan.

And being a Finn it is a bit embarrassing to say that actually you should also include northern Finland, because the Finnish government had in practice given it under the control of German troops.

I see that you're using the map from the Wikipedia page and that you say in 1942 in the description, but the title is just misleading. Nazi Germany definitely "directly controlled" parts of Italy after having to invade, in addition to the above comment about other countries in the Balkans being under Nazi control.

Actually, a lot more of Europe was ruled by the Nazis, yet this quiz does not show all the areas. They got to the Caucasus, they ruled most of the Balkan countries, and had almost all of France under them.
