Apparently the donuts used to be good but now they are not. I never understood the appeal personally.

Hey, the donuts are very good. Better than those ultra-sugary Krispy-Kremes. I especially like the apple fritters.

Agreed, Timmies may not be as good as $7/cup Starbucks, but you can get a coffee and a doughnut for a twoonie and some change, and it is consistent.

It's sad but the reality of the passage of time that a lot of people, even here in Canada don't know that Tim Horton was one of the greatest hockey players to play in the NHL and one of the greatest to ever wear the Toronto Maple Leaf sweater. The team could use him today. He opened the first Tim Horton Doughnut shop in Hamilton, Ontario while he was with the Leafs.

I think Tim Hortons is great!!! But I'll admit that part of the appeal may be the novelty of it being a Canadian donut store rather than an American one. Also, I feel like their selection of donuts is larger and more varied than Dunkin' Donuts or Krispy Kreme.

(For the record, Krispy Kreme is also great. Dunkin' Donuts is the least exciting of the three but mostly because I'm see/go to it all the time. I'm just a sucker for donuts.)

The doughnuts used to be good when it was locally owned. But then it sold itself to Wendy's in 1995, and then Burger King in 2013. To cut costs they started parcooking the doughnuts. Parcooking is a depressing process in which the doughnuts are partially cooked and then frozen at a central location. Then the doughnuts are shipped, thawed, and the cooking is finished. The result is gross, thick and sticks in your throat.

As a teenager I remember we used to hang out in the local 24hr Tim Hortons waiting for the fresh doughnuts to come out of the oven in the wee hours of the morning, after partying all night. Delicious, but that's gone now. It's silly that most people in Canada still associate Tim Hortons with Canadian culture/cuisine.

The coffee is decent if you're road tripping, and it's eminently cheaper/better than Starjunk. But I always opt for independent coffee and/or doughnut spots whenever possible.

@hybrid: Tim Horton was a solid NHL defenseman. Reliable, yes. Deserves to be remembered? Yes. One of the greatest to ever play? Not even in the conversation. He's probably not one of the top ten best defensemen of all time. I did find one online list with him at 24th best D-man ever, but I think calling Horton one of the best players ever is a pretty big overstatement.

Replying to @dimby. Using the "greatest" word is a matter of personal opinion. That's what is nice about opinions, they're just opinions - they're not right or wrong...just opinions and no one has to agree with them. You have yours and I have mine. It also wasn't the point of my comment - I was just lamenting the fact that most people who go a Tim Horton's don't even know who he was.

I think it may be more effective for a quiz that lasts beyond QE2 to say that the Governor General of Canada, as the formal representative of the monarchy, has the legal right to dissolve the House of Commons.

I'll update the quiz when the next monarch takes power. I was going to put "The Monarch of the United Kingdom", but then some nitpicker would say, "It's Actually the Monarch of Canada", who of course just happens to be the same exact person. Let's keep it simple.

Th relationship with the Crown is a bit more complicated than that in the Westminster system. The queen /GG has about as much "legal right" as Mike Pence had to not certify the election. Not a great question IMO.

I don't think that's an apt comparison, IMHO. If Canada wants to be a republic it should become one. Ireland did it.

Sounds like it's pretty much the same as the Westminster system - the Crown has all sorts of rights but agrees never to use them.
+1
Level 70
Mar 23, 2021
Technically the Crown can decide to do a bunch of stuff with Canada and the Canadian Government mainly because our Constitution is really weird but it never would because if it did Canada would no longer be a constitutional monarchy. The last time the GG or monarch actually used their powers in an actually meaningful way was in 1926 when Governor-General Byng refused to dissolve the Parliament and it ended up causing a large reduction in power for the GG & monarch. At the same time they could at least create a constitutional crisis for a few months.

I find it more fascinating to imagine how someone could "figuratively" live in Canada, since the ideas of "literal" and "figurative" have to coexist to have any meaning.

Yeah, I (an erstwhile Vancouverite, now transplanted to Calgary) came super close to making that my only wrong answer as well, until I re-read the question.

The statistic we (or at least: I) always hear is that a majority of people living in Vancouver are of non-European ancestry. Which of course isn't quite the same as "born in China or Hong Kong."

Leaving aside the issue of place of ancestry vs. place of birth, while the connotation one may always think of re: Vancouver is that most folks are Chinese, that's still not true. 12%, for example are either south Asian or Filipino. Not to mention Southeast Asians, or other non-Chinese east Asians, e.g.: Korean or Japanese.

All in all, only 27% of Vancouverites are of Chinese origin. (And again, most of those are probably still born in Canada, being what the question was asking.)

Some facts about Quebec's 1995 referendum:

-49,4% voted YES for the Independence, 50,6% voted NO.🥲

-For many people this result is clearly a big MAYBE...⚖️

-The participation rate was 94%! Over 5M people.

-It's really interesting to read about how the Canadian Government broke several rules to get this result (50,6%).😬 They literaly made EVERYTHING that were in there power, sometimes even with American help. They almost lose there cause even if they clearly overpassed the money allowed by each party, 5 millions CAD$.

-This big corruption scandal was revealed by the Sponsorship scandal in 2005.

-In 1995, the Canadian government allowed Citizenship to 43k people in Québec. For the first and only time to this day, more than Ontario.

-60% of the Francophones voted Yes ✅

98% of the Anglophones voted No ❌

~90% of the Allophones voted No ❌

95% of the First Nations voted No ❌

-27 years later, around ~33% of the Québécois are still Independantist. That's over 2 millions people. ⚜
