Surprised to see so few African countries on the list. Does this not include bananas grown for personal consumption or something?

Your question made me wonder about banana global commodity chains. Out of curiosity I looked them up on Follow the Thing and found this.

Same. I've been in Cameroon once and you could buy bananas everywhere on the street. Now that country might be still too small, but I'd definitely expect countries like Nigeria and DR Congo on this list.

Right. I thought for sure Uganda, where they're a staple. My guess is that only bananas for export make most national lists.

or perhaps atleast registered companies, and not 1 person/family street vendors.

When I first saw this quiz I read "Countries Producing the Most Bahamas" and I thought it was going to be a very short list,

In hindsight some obvious ones on here - due to their sheer size China etc would likely produce a high amount of bananas - but they didn’t come to mind at all at first ‘cause I was trying all the African and South American countries...

Interesting. I live in the southwestern USA but almost every banana I've ever eaten has an Ecuador or Guatemala sticker on it. Perhaps most of Mexico's bananas are not being exported. Or, maybe just the way supply chains work.

Yeah, it's strange. We get plenty of tropical fruits from Mexico (especially mangos and avocadoes) but no bananas I guess. Not sure why.

I always used to think that bananas originate from Africa because gorillas eat them but it turns out that they originate from Asia and only captive gorillas eat them.

Best fruit in the world by far, can't change my mind. Just it's tendency to be curved and it's nice yellow color, truly makes this fruit amazing
