I spent a long time not getting #5 for Europe and thinking that it must be some unexpected country with an intriguing reason for being on the list.

It was not.

Quite surprised not to see Saudi Arabia, given the amount of people going there on pilgrimage every year
+5
Level 78
Feb 10, 2019
According to Wikipedia, there are only about 2.35 million pilgrims per year, 600,000 of which are Saudi citizens and not international tourists. I'm kinda surprised that this number isn't higher.

As far as I'm aware, Saudi Arabia doesn't let many people in.

EU citizens get visa free travel to Morocco. Plus lots of French people go there as they speak French.

Got them all with 1:06 remaining at 11:48:39 PM on February 10, 2019, increasing my point total by 5 to 796. I was surprised India was not on the list, though the remaining answers were not surprising. Turkey was the last answer I guessed.

Interesting to see Cuba rounding out the top 5 in North America given that the 300 million Americans 90 miles to its north have such limited or onerous travel access.

The source of the data for this quiz stems from 2017. The updated 2018 report from the same publication doesn't have any data on Cuba for the subsequent year.

The Washington Post reported a 40% drop in American tourism from the year before. It seems like Cuba really experienced a spike in tourism in 2016 but that has since quickly abated at least in part due to the new administration in Washington.

Yep. Under the Obama administration, tourism greatly increased as relations were bettered. But under Trump, relations have soured and The US has increased travel restrictions.

I imagine lots of Canadians still go there, plus I think it’s likely the most popular destination in the Caribbean for Europeans

Wow, interesting to see that Mexico receives more tourists then the top 5 South American countries combined. I guess it makes sense, but it is wild to think about.

Level 49

Its only because of its border with the US. I would assume they receive about the same amount of old world tourists as the big south american nations.

Interesting. I never would have guessed that Dominican Republic would have more tourists than any other Caribbean tourist destination like Bahamas or Jamaica. Luckily, there isn't that many countries to choose from, so guesswork did the trick.

I'm surprised the Dominican Republic is the least guessed. To me it seems obvious, it's like everyone goes on vacation there, maybe it's just us Canadians?

I'm pretty confused because none of the figures in this quiz match the figures in the source - is there a newer source than the one being linked that is used? Secondly, it seems that both France and the US (not even including Hawaii) have significantly more tourists in Oceania than Papua New Guinea and Samoa based on the source.
