Great movie that heads in this direction is Take Shelter...but it is more a psychological thriller than a straight disaster movie.

The movie never says the volcano was in Washington. But it may have been implied because of the similarity to the Mount St. Helens eruption.

Wikipedia says: "Four years later, Harry is assigned by his superior, Dr. Paul Dreyfus, to investigate seismic activity near Dante's Peak, Washington, a town that borders a dormant stratovolcano."

But I've found quite a few imprecise movie plots in Wikipedia, they are less religiously fact-checked than other topics.

There are some other films which might be good for this quiz

Skyscraper : tallest building in world set alight by owners enemy and dad is blamed but he has to get his family from in the building

San Andreas : Huge earthquakes and tsunamis hit California

Geostorm : climate change destroys world weather but machine is built to stop the storms but Vice President in USA plants a virus in it causing it to destroy many cities.

Disappointed that The Poseidon Adventure didn't make the list. After all, the cast included five Oscar winners, and the film itself won two Oscars, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Motion Picture Sound Editors award! Of the numerous disaster films of that era, it's considered one of the best.
