Maybe Washington DC?
+13
Level 50
Feb 26, 2013
Nope. Washington is the name of the city. DC is the name of the district. That's why there's a comma between them.

What about Tampa Bay? it has 2.783 million people!

Level 50

Do people refer to Tampa Bay as Tampa?
+30
Level 77
Nov 19, 2018
Tampa Bay is a body of water. Tampa is the name of the city. It's confusing because the professional sports teams in the area are all named "Tampa Bay" because they all play in technically different cities that all border the bay.
+4
Level 54
Feb 16, 2019
It says city proper. Tampa proper has 385 000 people. Also Tampa is the city, Tampa Bay is the body of water.

Besides that, DC makes three words, "District of Columbia."

There is a Kansas City, Kansas, but it is part of the much larger metropolitan of Kansas City, Missouri, just like any other small city near it.

Kansas City, MO came first. It was named for the Kansas River.

Colorado City is an actual… well, I don’t think we can really say “city”, what with its teeming population of just over 2000 people, so we’ll say it’s an actual town. You go through it on I-25 on the way to the Sand Dunes in the Sangre de Cristos.

New York City is three words. New York (two words) is a state. If you are not including the "City", then you need to drop Kansas City, Jersey City, and Oklahoma City.
+17
Level 77
Nov 30, 2015
The difference is that the official name of NYC is not actually New York City. It's just New York. It's colloquially called New York City to differentiate it from the state in which it resides. On the other hand, Kansas City, Jersey City, and Oklahoma City are the official names of those cities.
+4
Level 79
Jan 22, 2016
Exactly. When addressing an envelope or looking at any actual address is simply New York, New York.

+6
Level 48
Sep 11, 2019
The official name of New York City is "New York". When writing postage to someone who lives there you will in fact write,

New York, New York. The city is added to differentiate between the state, but is not actually part of the official city name.

Fort Lauderdale? Or is that considered apart of Miami or whatever large city is around it?
+2
Level 74
Mar 9, 2016
There's only 172,389 people in Ft. Lauderdale. Next in the list would be Fort Wayne, IN; Chula Vista, CA; Saint Petersburg, FL; Winston-Salem, NC; Baton Rouge, LA; and San Bernardino, CA.

Level 90

Not meant to be a statement about this quiz but I hate city proper questions. Using that as a baseline cities like Tucson and Fresno are 50% larger than Miami and Atlanta, the 8th and 9th largest metropolitan areas of the country.
+3
Level 68
Sep 5, 2019
For a quiz like this I prefer city proper. We are looking for population of a city not half of the state around it. Metropolitan area is way too subjective and several of the answers in this quiz wouldn't make it because they would be within another's metro area (San Jose, Jersey City and Fort Worth to name a few).

California and Texas account for half of the answers.

And it took me till reading through half the comments for it to finally dawn on me why Salt Lade City wasn't working. I stubbornly tried it at least 4 times, double checking for spelling.

If your counting Oklahoma City, Kansas City, Jersey City, etc... then New York City shouldn't count. But, you could make a "Biggest Three-Word US Cities" quiz.
