The Chargers now fit the description of the NFL team that played in LA, left and then came back. Chargers played in LA their inaugural year.

Maybe an even better clue would be what team started in Cleveland moved to Los Angeles left and eventually returned to Los Angeles. They are the only team to relocate as the current NFL champion.

Except for Oakland, LA is the last place I'd return to.

Jack Kemp was the Chargers' quarterback in L.A.

He's making a joke about plastic surgery. Anyway the valley you are referring to that is up North is called Silicon (without the 'e') Valley.

I took it as a joke about both valleys being in California.
+5
Level 82
Oct 29, 2020
I got it. It just wasn't a very good joke. San Jose is pretty far away from LA. Silicon Valley is well-known to be in San Jose. San Fernando Valley is well-known as home to the valley girls. And valley girls were not known for having plastic surgery. That's more something you'd see in Beverly Hills or on Rodeo Drive.

With all the plastic surgeons I'm guessing there is a lot of silicone there, but not in valleys.
+8
Level 35

Valley Girls did not have plastic surgery. It was not a big deal yet. We hung out in the malls when they were new, all talk about clothing, makeup, and boys. Talked like most teenage girls do nowadays. "Like, for sure. Totally." "Gag me with a spoon." Moon Zappa recorded a song on this...early or mid 70s? My sister spoke exactly like that--eerie. I moved away and suddenly people noticed my speech. I dropped most of it bc you got no respect turning every statement into a question mark.

I definitely would not have guessed that. But, kids can do funny things. I once got a technical foul in a youth basketball game because I was arguing with the ref in a British accent and kept saying "bloody" and he took objection to that. I have no idea why I did that. LOL.

grew up in LA and Orange county. This was super easy except the hollywood sign one. I had no idea. I think most people who got it must have googled it. I mean other questions were a lot easier if you lived there and more people got some of those wrong.

The sign was in a movie a few years ago, maybe several. And documentaries and books about old Hollywood and old movie stars. There are stories about the sign, like someone bought the "O" in honor of Groucho Marx when they redid the sign. It originally marked a housing division built under it called "Hollywoodland."

"I think most people who got it must have googled it."

Wow. The ego-centrism is palpable. "I didn't know it THEREFORE no one else must have known it." Just, wow.

Keep your eyes open, you'll start seeing signs with "Hollywoodland" all over the place. Now you'll know why.

Believe me, it's the best place in the world! I moved away after living there 45 yrs and learned how awful it is elsewhere. People from all over the world have contributed to a thriving diverse community with 100 things to do. People are smarter in California--all the colleges from the JCs to private schools for arts, fashion, technology, then the world-rated 30th best university. All the entertainment. The beaches. People think it's all entertainment industry, but there is a world class city there, independent of that, that rarely crosses its path. It just needs the representation in Congress it deserves by population, not 1/4, and it needs a transportation system!

Visited Los Angeles last winter and had a great time. It can be a beautiful city. I think part of the reason people are negative is that it used to be a lot better. There was probably no better place in the world to live from about 1920 to 1970 or so.

I visited and maybe I was in the wrong parts but I found it a dump. Rundown, too much traffic, only 3 metro lines, a few touristy streets. Some nice roads for driving and nice walks in the hills when it's not too smoggy.

"People are smarter in California" is debatable. If you'd have said "people in California think they are smarter than everyone else", then I could agree with you. (Gross generalizations, I know, but while the weather is admittedly great in LA, you couldn't pay me enough to live there.)

When did In N Out ever have anything called animal style fries? When we visited Orange County and first encountered In N Out there were only fries, no options, just fries. Lived in Silicon Valley for a while (nearly 20 years) and when In N Out finally reached there there were only fries, really really really good fries but no options involving anything but size of order. And very moreish burgers. Straightforward simple and always fresh hot off the grill.

I miss In N Out.

I think an important distinction is that Rodney King's beating did not cause the riots. It was the acquittal of the officers at trial that caused the riots. People could live with knowing there were a few violent police officers out there. They flipped out when they learned that there on consequences for being a violent police officer.
