I don't know any German, but the word looks to be pronounced "man shaft." There's really only one obvious answer. It wasn't the right answer, but I stand by it.

You will be pleased to learn that the word Schaft describes narrow, elongated objects, such as scapes, sheaths, and stalks.

Mann is indeed the German word for man but it's pronounced more like the mon in money. And Schaft is indeed the German word for shaft but again it's pronounced differently: More like the shuff in shuffle and then add the t. If that makes any sense whatsoever.

Good quiz. A bit more flexibility for the spelling of the winning goal scorer in 2014 possibly. Took me a few attempts to get it.

I second this. The most accurate way of transcribing the German "ö" into English is with "oe".

Should really accept "crew" for Mannschaft. (And squad if you don't already.) It's also a valid translation.

If you go to French Wikipedia, you will see that their team is also called Les Tricolores, which is what I tried, but wasn't accepted.

I'm French, we say way more often "les Bleus" or "Allez les Bleus!" (Let's go Blues!) than "les tricolores". In fact we nickname all our national sport teams "les Bleus"...
+2
Level 68
Sep 23, 2022
We say either "les Bleus" or "l'équipe tricolore". "Tricolore" is rarely used without "équipe" - and "les Bleus" is more common anyway.

Yes. It is known as "the hand of God".
+4
Level 38

It counted because the referee did not see it. It became infamously called "the hand of God" afterwards. Fortunately for him Maradona also scored the "goal of the century" during the same game !

Maradona himself called that goal the hand of God, in the postmatch interview

The question about Zidane is wrong.

It must have been : Who scored two unforgetable goals against Brazil in 1998 ?

I've forgotten those goals. There are many fantastic goals every world cup. But head butts, there's only this one.

Seulement si vous êtes Français vous vous souviendrez de ces buts.

But a headbutt... and in the Final! (and his final game!)... That an image for eternity!

(Let's be honest, it's the first thing anyone remember about Zidane. Next thing is the goal against Leverkusen)

Maradona's goal is more often called the Hand of God. That was the most blatant cheating I've ever seen in an organized sporting event. Everyone saw it except the refs. I'd hardly justify that awful sportsmanship by calling it the Goal of the Century.

You are confusing goals. In this match, Maradona scored two goals. One of them was the "Hand of God" (an awful cheat), and the other was the "Goal of the Century" (probably the best goal in any World Cup so far)

Level 76

It clearly states that the Hand of God goal was the other goal aside from the Goal of the Century. The GotC was Maradona's solo run from beyond the center line, passing four opponent players including the keeper. It was his second goal only minutes after the shambolic one.

I missed three about nicknames (only guessed the australian's one because I learnt it like one day ago). I tried Gaellic for the french one, but I'm not surprised it didn't count.
