k2 is not completely in Pakistan, It lies in the disputed region of Kashmir which belongs to ...........
+21
Level 60
Oct 28, 2017
K2 is in Gilgit-Baltistan or FANA(Federally Administered Northern Areas) which technically belongs to Pakistan. It has no relation with the Kashmir issue. FANA is not part of Kashmir.

I thought it was FATA (Tribal)?

Level 71

The entire region of Kashmir was ceded to India, so 'technically' it's not a part of Pakistan. Going by the same logic, Ladakh should also not be a part of Kashmir so why does Pakistan claim all of it as well?
+10
Level 60
May 24, 2020
@918Winchan Pakistan does not claim Kashmir as its own. Pakistan's stance is that Kashmir is currently a free state (which is why it is not a province of Pakistan) and until the plebiscite is conducted, it belongs to no one but the Kashmiris. If and only if the Kashmiris allow anyone to enter, it will happen.
+11
Level 71

Well, that's new. The Pakistan I know is the one where everyone says 'Kashmir banega Pakistan' (Kashmir will become Pakistan, for non Urdu and Hindi speakers) and I somehow really doubt what you said here is even remotely close to what an average Pakistani thinks of the situation.

Independent Kashmir is a pipe dream. If magically India and China give up their claims can a sane person really expect Pakistan to allow Kashmiris their freedom? Looking at Pakistan's human rights record, probably not.

If Gilgit Baltistan is a separate region, then why is Pakistan claiming Jammu, Kargil and Ladakh as a part of Kashmir.
+10
Level 60
Jul 4, 2020
@918Winchan We say "Kashmir banega Pakistan" because we are confident that if a plebiscite were to be conducted, which is what should happen according to the UN's decision, the Kashmiris would vote for annexation with Pakistan. However, if they were to vote to be independent (which I highly doubt would happen considering they are surrounded by 3 nuclear armed nations), they will surely be left alone, but as I mentioned, it is highly unlikely.

Level 62

Note the Vocabulary used - "Annexation with Pakistan" .

Kashmiris - whether they Might be Hindus ,Muslims or Sikhs , want to remain as a part of India and India only. The rest is terror campaigns funded by Pakistan to disturb the Peace in India.

+2
Level 71

@Eigengrau Kashmiris want their own state which INCLUDES Gilgit-Baltistan. I am sure they would want to choose to be with Pakistan, which claims Kashmiri lands as its own and has also riddled both "Azad" Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan with Pakistani Punjabis with the intention to virtually destroy Kashmiri culture.

I like how you say they would vote for "annexation" by Pakistan, as if you yourself don't want to give them the option for a free state lol.

@geoquiz123 Like I said to your other account above(or maybe its not idk) Kashmiris are not very fond of either Pakistanis or Indians. The radical islamists who want to be a part of Pakistan don't speak for all Kashmiris. You're delusional.

I'll try to be as neutral here as I can, but as an Indian, I think I'll have a bit of bias.

In 1947, after independence, Kashmir was left deciding whether to join Pakistan, India or be independent. While they were deciding, Pakistan decided to invade because they thought the Hindu Maharaja would decide to join India. This caused the Maharaja to cede his country to India, which India quickly occupied and defended against Pakistan. However, Pakistan kept a bit of the northeast (Gilgit-Baltistan) and the borders were kept like that due to a UN ceasefire. The UN also demanded a referendum to decide the fate of Kashmir, but this has not happened to this day, likely due to a country (possibly India) delaying this.

However, this didn't stop Pakistan's efforts to get the entire region. Most notably in 1965, they snuck soldiers across the border to incite rebellion among the locals and led to the Indo-Pak war of 1965, which was a victory for India (though both sides claim victory).

Level 68
Jan 23, 2023
A similar thing happened in 1999 in Kargil, which India held off again. The borders to this day have mostly remained unchanged since 1948, with the exception of China having Aksai Chin.

I think the best action going forward is to have a referendum, but subdivide it with the UN watching over. Kashmiris would have an option to join India or Pakistan, because realistically, I don't think any Kashmiris will vote for independence. This will take into account the 70-year-old border and the displacement it has caused.

The most realistic good scenario (in my opinion) would be making the current border official. I think this would cause the least stress, especially since most Kashmiris who want to join India or Pakistan would be on the right side of the border. This would also negate much reason for more wars since there is a hard border.

I hope that clears it up. Feel free to point evidence of bias or any mistakes I might have made. Otherwise, great quiz. I think the K2 question is fine.

How exactly do you think we make money? Visitors to the site cost us money. Advertising makes money. Unless you are in a valuable demographic that advertisers want to reach, you are a money loser for the site.

But don't worry about it. It all works out in the end and we're doing just fine financially. We're happy to lose a little money on our non-US/Europe users and hope that you enjoy using the site.

Despite being the lingua-franca, Urdu is spoken by only 8% of Pakistanis as a first language. Thus, there are only about 16 M native Urdu speakers in Pakistan while India has 60 M. Interesting!
