U should take "independent" for for "republic of Texas"

No. It was called Republic of Texas. USA was never called "Independent".
+12
Level 54

I think they are referring to Texas being called "Independent," not the US, since Texas being controlled by Texas sounds slightly redundant. While nothing ever called "Independent" has controlled Texas, the answer "Independent" is referring to Texas and its independence.

Accepting "Independent" for "Republic of Texas" would imply Texas being controlled by its own independent self.

No one's offended by historical data. The confederate flag as seen in the quiz is the Confederate Flag, a far cry from the Stars and Bars, a Confederate battle flag which is used exclusively post-Civil War as a symbol for racial division.

I believe the Texas area was first claimed by Spain, then France, then Mexico. Texas then became independent, then joined the USA, then seceded and joined the CSA. Finally rejoined the USA after the War between the States.

Took me a little while to think of that one as well but after thinking a bit it became obvious. Nobody else has controlled Texas since it joined the USA.

Find it historically a bit strange call Confederate states a "country". At least according to modern interpretation of the international laws they would not count.
+18
Level 90
Mar 6, 2019
Why is that? It had international relationships with multiple countries including Britain and France (the two most important countries in the world). Applying modern standards to past incidents is a fool's errand.

The USA did not recognize them as a country. That was the whole point of the war though...

Interesting SeaNomad..... considering that the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA recognized the REPUBLIC of TEXAS as an independent nation March 6 1837. The Republic of Texas opened an embassy in Washington D.C. in 1841.

I agree, but I think this quiz is more based off of the flags that are included in the cultural six flags of Texas. Despite not being a country, it was one of the flags that flew over Texas

This should be reworded: "the six countries." The Confederacy was never a recognized country, not by the Union or any other nation; perhaps reword it to say "countries/entities," or, just remove the CSA as an answer, period.

Level 59

I have changed it from "countries" to "nations". Why would I remove it as an answer? It is what it is, like it or not.
+7
Level 88
Mar 6, 2019
Removing CSA is not an option. It's not "Five Flags Over Texas". Whether or not you consider the CSA a legit country, the flag still counts.
+15
Level 53

It wasn't recognized as a sovereign nation by other countries, but that decision is more from political concerns than accurate taxonomy. The Confederacy had its own president, printed its own money, issued passports, patrolled its borders, and traded with other countries. They had their own army and navy. During the Civil War they were independent from the USA and did not obey any superior governmental entity.

I have no sympathy with the CSA or its cause, but for these reasons I think it would be accurate to say it did exist as an independent nation-state. If Taiwan is a country, the CSA was one.

this quiz is very clearly about the six flags over Texas, not the countries or not countries those flags belonged to. As a Texan who has been recently taught Texas history I can tell you that many Texans felt very culturally aligned with the Confederacy and accepted it's governing whether or not it was a legitimate country. (not saying it was)

How about the natives? It would have been interesting that we include all the native nations that occupied that land before europeans in the quizz. We are not enough taught of what happened before Christopher Colombus.

Fun fact: The original theme park Six Flags Over Texas is called that because of these six nations whose flags flew over Texas throughout its history. The park has six different sections, one for each of those nations. At the entrance to the park, all six flags were always on display, including the Confederate flag (the real one: https://media.vocativ.com/photos/2015/06/Flag_of_the_Confederate_States_of_America_1861-1863.svg_.png,

NOT the one you're thinking of). This attracted very little attention, as it was only capturing the full history of Texas, until 2017 when one or two people complained and the flags were replaced with all 50-star American flags, completely erasing the meaning of Six Flags.

Seeing that these people involved in the Republic of the Rio Grande are my direct ancestors, I have the utmost interest and compassion for this. However, this is just a failed rebellion that doesn't have the merit of any of the other answers. As just and romantic as it may have been, it doesn't meet the criteria that the others do. If we counted every rebellion worldwide as legit independent nations, there'd be too many to count. Anyhow, that's my reasoning for leaving it off.....that and my 7th grade Texas History teacher, Mr. Sudberry, never mentioned it! Lol jk

I had less than a minute left and had only one country left to guess. After examining the list of the countries I had guessed so far, I realized that the order of the quiz was in order of succession. I paused the game and asked myself, "Who had Texas for a bit after the US?" I knew that it probably happened sometime during the 1800's, because that's when the US got Texas, so I thought to myself "Hmm, what else happened during the 1800's? I know the Civil War was..." I paused, and then BAM! It hit me.
