Kobenhavn, the capital of Danmark, contains a K

We use the english names on JetPunk, which is Copenhagen and does not contain a K. Either way, I've slightly changed the clue so it does not count anyway (which was the original intention by stating "not Kiev")

So does Mockba. But, you know, you're speaking English to us and we to you, so....

To be clear, it's Москва, not Mockba. I see what you're doing, but the 'kb' in the middle doesn't match Cyrillic letters.

Listing all the alternatives once you get a question right, effectively gives you hints on other questions. Not that I'm complaining!

The clue for "begins with same letter but distinctly different" could stand to be worded better. I finally got where you were going, but it took me awhile to figure it out.

I tried Andorra la Vella - I know it starts the same but I'd still call it distinctly different.
+8
Level 68
Oct 30, 2019
This was my trouble with the wording. The target was capitals that don't look anything like their country (i.e. knowing the country only wouldn't help you answer that question). So I was trying to avoid Luxembourg, Andorra la Vella (which contains the country name) and so on.

I think the phrasing is perfectly fine. I got it immediately. And if you dont know when something is distinctly different (as opposed to nearly exactly the same with just slight a difference) that is not the fault of the quizmaker.

Maybe using "completely different" instead of distinctly different will solve the problem for people that do not seem to get it? Not sure because to me it is no clearer than the first (and then you get smart asses saying, "well it is not completely different... this word contains an s aswell and has vowels too" etc.

Distinctly different in this case is simply that no parts of the capital name are derived from the name of the country. If even I as a non-native english speaker find it obvious, native speakers really shouldnt have an issue with it. Though I know time restraints can really influence your cognitive abilities.

I think foxyfab is making the same point that I was in the first comment, namely that it really is pretty pointless to have English "translations" of foreign towns and countries. Why not simply use the original names throughout?
+5
Level ∞
Jan 29, 2020
Lots of reasons. For one, the translations are easier to pronounce. Secondly, they are easier to spell. Finally, what about countries that use a non-Roman alphabet? Should we expect people to learn Cyrillic and Chinese characters?

It properly states "Former Yugoslav Republics", not just independent states as of now, and Kosovo was a Former Yugoslav Autonomous Province, not a Former Yugoslav Republic.
