Didn't know Botswana had all those elephants or Monrovia was named after Monroe! (among other stuff I clearly didn't know for this quiz) Fun quiz

I guessed Liberia because I knew that Liberia was something something something relation with the USA and that is also why its flag looks very similar to the American one.

That's exactly why I guessed it too.

It was originally established by freed American slaves and was protected from the United States from European colonials. As a result, it is the only country in Africa never colonized by Europeans.

Ethiopia likes to make that claim, too, Cringe. Actually Ethiopia likes to say they are the only country in Africa never colonized at all, because Liberia was colonized by American slaves. But personally I find Ethiopia's claim a little dubious. Italy was in Ethiopia from 1935 to 1939. They weren't there for very long, and they never took over the entire country, but I still think it should probably count.

There is a difference between colonized and occupied.
+3
Level 82
Aug 31, 2020
^ yes and every time I've asked anyone to define for me what that difference is, the definition they give me for "colonized" definitely fits what Italy did to Ethiopia. Unless it contains some arbitrary length of time not found in any dictionary definition.

Liberia's colonization was not by Europeans, although it was facilitated by European-Americans. It was, however, colonized - with Americo-Liberians as the settler-colonists. They even undertook the conquest of the interior, as required by the terms of African colonization set out at the Berlin conference, in manners not dissimilar to those of Europeans. Their rule lasted more than a century-and-a-half.

Wouldn't Gambia also count as an answer about being surrounded by another country? Unless the ocean is kind of a technicality here.

I think the ocean is the point. I wondered about Swaziland, but now I see it borders Mozambique as well as SA.

Gambia clearly isn't completely surrounded by another country if some part of it isn't surrounded, like Monaco. As opposed to Lesotho, Vatican and San Marino.

They are Algerians and Algerian descended people who LIVE IN France but they are not ethnically French therefore they aren't French. Europe isn't like North America as it wasn't built on immigration from all around the world and indigenous communities throughout Europe have had their own culture way before North America was colonized. If you go to China, Japan, India, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, U.A.E., etc and you have a child born there your child will not be given citizenship nor will they be considered Chinese, Japanese, Saudi, Emirati, etc by a massive amount of the indigenous locals there unless their blood is indigenous to that country. Minus the citizenship, Europe is no different.

Anybody carrying a passport for a country is deemed to be from that country. When you start talking about indigenous blood you are walking the road to Nazism. The countries you mention are not the flag carriers of democracy.

There is a fair bit of nonsense in that comment above by gzx5. Firstly, though you can see what is meant, there most definitely were indigenous communities with their own culture in America before the mass immigration starting in the sixteenth century. But also when you consider countries like France, Britain and the Netherlands, there has been quite a bit of immigration from all around the world for centuries, with a large increase in volume post WW2. I don't presume to speak for our French and Dutch friends but I can assure you that in Britain those of us born in the UK whose heritage stretches back to other countries are considered by just about everyone to be as British as the next person. Not just the passport then.
