There seems to be an error with the cities that share names. They seem to be accepted just fine (at least the ones that I got), but they all show the same name when hovering over them. For example, all of the Springfields are listed as "Springfield, IL," all of the Portlands are listed as "Portland, OR," etc.

Level 74
Aug 26, 2019
Ah, I see what I did wrong. All of the dots called Springfield (as well as all other duplicate names) have the same ID on the map, meaning they all show as the same city. Unfortunately, I'm unable to work on the map at the moment because I don't have access to a computer, so hopefully Quizmaster will be able to fix it in the mean time.

Really cool quiz. One grump, and nothing to do with your quiz-setting because you're only posting what is declared by the census people, is that "Gettysburg" appearing here is ridiculous - it only has 8000 people. The Gettysburg MSA is the whole of Adams County, a county rural in flavour with a zillion villages and small towns. The same goes for California, Maryland with just 12,000 people, whose MSA comprises the entire county in which it is situated.
+4
Level 74
Aug 27, 2019
I agree, some of these are absolutely ridiculous. However, with the system the Census Bureau uses sometimes there's no way to get around it. Because their measurement system uses counties, you end up with some really weird boundaries, like Johnstown, a suburb of Loveland, being included in the Greeley MSA, even though Greeley is over an hour away (just to use an example from my area). You can read more about it here. (My first feature, might as well do some shameless self advertising, right?)

Midland, MI is unlabeled and cannot be solved.

Gainesville, FL shows for Athens, GA. Meanwhile, Athens, GA shows west of Atlanta (probably supposed to be Carrollton, GA). Macon, GA also appears twice: where it's supposed to be and then just east of Atlanta.

This is a MASSIVE quiz, so thank you for this undertaking. I'm assuming this will take several republishings (:, but a couple things - Lafayette, IN is labeled as Lafayette, LA, while the one in LA is labeled correctly. There are two metros labeled Harrisonburg in Virginia. I'm assuming the second one (a little to the south) is Staunton. Also, Bloomington, IN is labeled as IL.

Great quiz! I'm glad to see that this idea got published. There were just a couple issues that I saw. There appear to be 2 Macon, GAs (I think the northern one is Athens) and 2 Harrisonburg, VAs (western one is Staunton). If it would help, I can send you some of my data on this to confirm everything. Thank you for making a much nicer version of this quiz!

The newest update is missing a few cities. While I can't remember off the top of my head, some that I remember were Rome in Georgia, Kokomo, IN, and the dot for Portland, OR.

Also, the census bureau has some strange definitions for metro areas, considering cities like Lancaster and Santa Clarita in California and Poughkeepsie in New York are not considered some of them.

Finally fixed the problems with the map. I looked into Poughkeepsie, and turns out it was redesignated as a metro area a few years back and has been added to the quiz. Thanks.

So much fun! I managed to get 4 points with 228 answers, but that leaves a lot of room for improvement. I'll be coming back to this one for sure.

I felt a little bad for missing a city in Georgia (the state where I live), but was mollified when I noticed it was the least guessed answer at 9%.

Amazing quiz, US metro and 1M+ cities world are my absolute favourite but this one has calmer dot colour. So much better for my eyes, so it gets top1. My only issue is Albany, OR - the only city you have to specify the state. Could you make it accept 'albany' as well?

This quiz is so fun and one of my favorites on JetPunk. Just a couple of suggestions. I was born in Maryland and live there now in my 40's and I struggled with the location in southern Maryland. After looking it up, I would definitely rename California, MD to Lexington Park, MD as it's much more well known in the area than California and is in the same MSA. Also, there's Cambridge, MD MSA, which is missing on this quiz. It's on the Eastern Shore north of Salisbury, MD. Keep up the great work!

Strictly speaking Riverside County encompasses MUCH of the Inland Empire, including Yucaipa, San Bernardino, Eagle Rock, Moreno Valley, etc. Though San Bernardino has it's own country, Riverside is by far the largest metro area outside of LA itself.
