Good one. Just a thought, some interesting quizzes like this, why can't it qualify for points straight away or after a bit. Obviously QM can decide instead of waiting for times taken or whatever. How the hell am I to reach level 50 otherwise???!!!

But Taiwan is part of China, which would make Taipei a regional/state capital, but not a national capital

How have you reached Level 53 without ever seeing Taiwan listed as independent from China? It is considered so in all Jetpunk quizzes.

Taiwan is a sovereign state according to the UN, as well as Kosovo, so their country is counted separately

Not exactly. A little over half of UN members recognize Kosovo. The UN as an organization does not take a stance because the Big 5 disagree with each other. About 20 countries out of the nearly 200 in the world recognize the Republic of China's claim to all of China, including Taiwan. At the same time, the general public in the West thinks of Taiwan and Kosovo as independent because they function as sovereign states.

@Sulps: which is what makes it so frustrating that Quizmaster decides to recognize Taiwan and Kosovo as independent, but not Palestine... The rule seems to be whatever the US feels, rather than an objective criteria (UN members for example). Vatican is a UN observer, but so is Palestine. Taiwan is recognized by less countries than let's say the Western Sahara... It will always remain arbitrary, until the world agrees. :)

The U.S. doesn't recognize Taiwan.

The US did recognise Taiwan until they wanted to form foreign relations with China

I thought you meant both the UN and Kosovo thought of Taiwan as a nation and were so confused in my head. Kosovo should be the deciding factor as to whether or not something is a nation lol.

Well both China and Taiwan agree it's the same country... they just can't decide who'd be the leader

sami: I don't think that's what he meant. The official position of the People's Republic of China is that Taiwan is a province of the PRC. The official position of the Republic of China is that China is part of the ROC. They both claim sovereignty over the other, though neither actually exert it. At least that's how it was when the Kuomintang were chased out by the Communists in '49. Not 100% if official stances have been modified or not in recent years but not that I'd heard about.

It would sure be nice to have a map attached showing the arbitrary line someone decided to place in the middle of that mess of islands north of Australia to delineate the "border" between Asia and Oceania.

I spelled it your way, too, and I'm usually the one who can't spell the capitals...like Dili for instance. Never did get the spelling right even though I knew the name. So frustrating. (I kept trying to put an e in it somewhere.)

Ulan Bator was the anglicized name, just like Beijing was called Peking or Mumbai was mainly referred to as Bombay.

The name being used now comes directly from Mongolian, Ulaanbaatar.

I think Ulaan Baatar should be updated to its current spelling. This has already been done in almost every other Jetpunk quiz, if not all of them. (The old spelling was when the country was in the Soviet orbit, and mimicked the Russian transliteration.)
