I would recommend saying "artificial" instead of "man-made", to make it a gender-neutral term.

Considering employment rates among women for manual labour in 1950's Zambia, I am willing to bet the lake/dam was built by a bunch of blokes.

Man-made is already gender neutral. The "man" refers to mankind, not the male gender.

that's agreed by everyone, but the point is that, as part of our efforts to move towards a more formally inclusive language, we should try to use terms which everyone can feel included in. while 'man-made' is used in the sense of 'artificial', it can come across as suggesting that 'men' (i.e. male people) constitute the human race in its entirety, especially when English is littered with these unintentionally gendered terms.

or to put it another way: nobody has any problem with 'artificial', so even a few people feeling alienated by 'man-made' has got to give it the advantage, given that it's really not a difficult change to make.

i don't understand why people are so resistant to these things, when it takes so little time out of your day to alter but can make so many people so much happier if we all do it. spot these things in your speech and writing, make a conscious effort to use a better word, and the world becomes that little bit better.

I am a woman and feel included because I am part of mankind. You say that you don't understand so maybe I can share my thoughts to help.

It takes all kinds of people to make the world go round, and people resist this kind of thing because it's creating a problem that wasn't there and then trying to force people to conform to the solution that doesn't do a thing to actually make the world a better place.

If you prefer the term artificial, go for it! Make your own quiz and we will all go take it.

I appreciate your reasoning jenny. What a kind and considerate reply while proving a point. I wish everyone could be so civil.

Apparently I know a whole lot more about Malawi than I do about Zambia. :-P (can't possibly be this one was harder!)

I did get "kwacha", though! Any currency that has rhinos on it is okay by me.

ha ha ha. Thanks for the feedback. I also love rhinos on currency, it's the reason why the South African R10 note is my favourite in that country.

I don't know about now, but Zambian bills used to all feature an image of a man breaking his chains - pretty cool too. By the way, I'm not a Kaunda apologist, but there's a tendency on this site to be quicker with the "dictator" title for some than for others.

Well, I've stayed right next to the damned dam, but in my mind the question was about Lake Kivu (which doesn't make any geographical sense) and kept trying everything related to limnic eruptions. I didn't remember the term limnic, which had me down the wrong path forever.
