I've revised this user quiz. If you are taking it for points, keep in mind that it might have to be reset - since I can't guarantee that it is 100% accurate right now.
Looks great, however, other maps show higher percentages e.g. for Jordan (100%) and Saudi-Arabia (~50%) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Turkish_Empire_1606.jpg)
Wow! Though quizzes kept referring to Turkey, I knew that there were more countries under Ottoman rule. I would have guessed that countries to the south of Turkey (covering the entire Middle East) and north of Turkey (Greece, Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Romania and maybe Ukraine) would have been part of the Ottoman Empire. Would never have thought of Russia and the African continent at all.
30 of 36 .... 32nd percentile NO possible way that is a reflection of true ability , i believe almost no one here who says 36 of 36 first time is being honest unless it is the 4th try or later
I had 36/36 on my first try. Guessed Djibouti with 7 secs left. It's not that hard if you know basic geography, history, happen to live in one on the countries that was once partially under Ottoman rule and play Europa Universalis extensively.
I got 36/36 first try with 1:47 left by guessing basically all of the southeastern European, Middle Eastern, and northern African countries... it's not that difficult
It's not that hard to just name countries one after another in a particupar direction until they stop being correct answers. I, for example, didn't know how far south of Egypt they ruled. So I tried them all and when SouthSudan, Ethiopia and Somalia didn't work, I knew I have them all and can move elsewhere. Same with Morocco, etc.
Oh, and I got 36/36 on my first try. And I don't really care if you don't believe me. ;-)
It's not as hard as you'd think, even without history knowledge, as long as you know that empire has been founded in Anatolia region or simply modern day Turkey and are geography geek. So logically if you know map by heart, you're gonna type in countries bordering Black Sea, Caucasus mountains, Middle East, Mediterranean Sea, Southern Europe, Balkans and North Africa. From there you just have to work out from % given by quiz, and simply work your way further, once I realized that it didn't have control over Oman UAE Qatar and Bahrain because it was controlling red sea coast only I tried Red Sea countries on African side and done the same towards Algeria.
Actually I think it’s more of a footstool. To think back in the day that footstools conquered much of Europe and the Middle East though is crazy. Really makes you rethink your furniture choices.
In 1878 a British protectorate was established in Cyprus under Ottoman suzerainty (so they did have a simultaneous presence!).
Today the UK only has garrisons in Akrotiri and Dhekelia. They could be considered overseas territories, but are different from other territories in that they are strictly used for military purposes.
Montenegro was never controlled 100%. The inner mountain regions around the Zeta valley never fell to the Ottomans. You're also missing Indonesia (the sultanate of Aceh was formally a dependency of the Ottoman empire).
I thought this too. I just started at Turkey and went north, east, south and west till I got them all. There's plenty of time to get lots of wrong answers and still score the maximum.
