Okay, who the heck is going to get xyst?

Mar 18, 2022
in case you're wondering, it was just that one x word. What the heck is a xyst?
+13
Level 76
Mar 15, 2022
I did, though I didn't know what it meant. So I looked it up and it means a garden walk planted with trees in an ancient Roman villa (I'm not making this up). Now I have never heard anyone say I want to walk along the xyst even if they were indeed walking along the xyst, and if it's never used does it cease to be a word? This is an important philosophical question, like does Palestine exist if nobody only 139 countries recognise it? Bad example, how about does Molossia exist if nobody recognises it? Same with xyst. One day dictionarians will delete that word and on that day this will become a 25-answer quiz.

Level 60

Sounds like one of the words used in vocabulary exams at my school - hard words to stress about, that you’ll never see or hear written or spoken by any sensible person.

+4
Level 68
Mar 14, 2022
Maybe this was the goal all along...

But seriously, generally when there's such an outlier like this it would just be removed from the quiz. But of course, you can't just remove a letter from the alphabet so it must stay :)

+3
Level 84

Or you just give the answer in a grey cell.

Is there a reason why x-ray isn't considered a valid 4 letter word? Is it because of the hyphen? It's been years since I played Scrabble and I don't remember the specific rules about what words count.
+4
Level 68
Mar 14, 2022
Yep hyphenated words and (most) proper nouns (start with a capital generally) don't count. There are some exceptions where proper nouns have other meanings.
+1
Level 62
Mar 25, 2022
Or sometimes when the proper noun has become so synonymous with what it does that it now also functions as a verb (viz. Google). You can’t have a proper verb, after all!

+6
Level 69
Mar 25, 2022
Damn, the time limit is brutal for a non-native speaker.
+1
Level 66
Mar 20, 2024
I am a non-native speaker and got all but x with 50 seconds to spare.

It think it helped I could use a lot of word ending in the -oat sound, started with boat and coat, and could do several more, also "note" still having the sounb in my head. And only a small adaptation needed (for my own logic/speed of thinking) to switch to dead. I realise now there is also something like dode or dote (to spoil a child or cuddle them a lot or something like that). And herd. I don't know the -oat was a starting point and for most words it just felt like a small side-step (not for the vowels and q and z for instance)

Anyway in short, if you get into a flow it helps. If you start from scratch from each word your brain have to restart each time. Hope this is helpful to someone

Actually only your first attempt of any quiz is counted towards the stats. However people can still cheat by googling the answers or "giving up" the quiz with 0 (so the take doesn't count) and then retaking. Or reading comments too

Cant (without the ') works but dont (with or without the ') doesn't?
+4
Level 68
Aug 29, 2023
Because "cant" is a word on its own unrelated to "can not". Whereas "dont" is not a word on its own

If I remember correctly cant is something along the lines of "slang" I think language/words used by a specific group of people (like those in a specific profession or like the language of thieves).

Yes I know strange/unusual words haha, and I language which is not my own. My family sometimes makes jokes that I should have been born somewhere else haha. (and my sister just wished me happy st-patricks day with the text "since you are practically english anyway"
